With the introduction of USB-C now with the new ipads, will it be possible to say, transfer raw files from a camera to a external hard drive using the Ipad that's connected to a USB-C dock? I want to be able to leave the laptop at home and just carry the ipad on vacation if this is possible.

Using new Ipad to transfer RAW files from camera to external hard drive?

I've been doing that same thing now with my 10.5" iPP using a wireless FileHub. Plug both the SD card and a 4TB HDD into the hub and using an app on the iPad to do it.
Which filehub do you use and how is the speed of the transfer? My files are usually 100mb+ (42mp) so I'm concerned about bandwith being it is wireless.
The RAVPower WD03. I measured the transfer rate from the SD card to the HDD (Sandisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD card
Western Digital 4TB USB3.0 My Passport Ultra Portable Hard Drive) to be 12.48 MB/sec. The transfer itself is through the device so it's not a wireless transfer.
Note that the Verge reports that the new iPad does not support a hard drive -

I also own the new version of the RAVPower FileHub but have found that the older (and cheaper) model is faster on the SD->HDD transfer.

Umm......I have been transferring RAW files from my 5DIV onto my iPad Pro 10.5" via lightning->sd reader.
You DO have to set your DSLR settings to RAW only, meaning you can not shoot RAW+JPEG as the JPEG will take priority in the transfer. However if you are shooting solely in RAW it should work.

One other aspect to this device - I don't do much processing on the iPad but using Lightroom CC to edit the RAW image, I can send the processed JPEG result to the HDD attached to the FileHub by doing a "Copy To" the FileHub app and selecting HDD as the target.
Either the verge or Engadget confirmed that external storage is NOT supported over usb-c so the answer unfortunately is no.
I wonder if an app like File Explorer could support external devices...

Yes & No. I can see external devices attached to the wireless FileHub and things attached to my local network (all via SMB) with FileBrowser & FileExplorer but neither see anything physically attached to the iPad.
Yeah that's why I was wondering myself. FE and VLC can easily browse network shares, including from a Ravpower Filehub Plus, so it would be pretty cool if certain apps could manage storage.
Yes sir I'm using the R3. Yeah I'm still not quite sure if the Ravpower is the way to go for me at least. I think I may still have to stick to lugging around my 15incher. I'm also considering perhaps getting a Surface Go for the purpose of transferring files and I suppose in-flight entertainment while I'm at it.
Interesting. I've been using the RAVPower extensively for 3 years and have yet to see a failed transfer.
Why not get one of those external drives that have card slots? First back up there and then import to your iPad for on the fly editing backing up the edits to the cloud?
I love the iPads, but the restrictions are certainly annoying. If they just added a bit of file management capability, it would be so much closer to the point of not needing a computer. Like in your scenario, on flights... I've copied stuff onto a hard drive and plugged it into the Ravpower, and streamed it using VLC. That's a bit complicated. Much easier on a Surface Go, but they lack power.
I've seen some users mention that on this forum. While travelling, I'd copy 2-3 full 64/128GB cards daily, and I had to double check for failed ones. I've had this experience with the WD Wireless Passport as well. IIRC I saw pretty slow transfer speeds of around 12 MB/s.

That's essentially what a FileHub is except that the hard drive is interchangeable - much better than the dedicated wireless drives that I have.
