I'm not a US citizen but I'm getting the 3G iPad and want to use 3G this summer when I go to the US. Has anyone tried using a non-US credit card to pay for the US data plan? Is there at least a field for entering country when you enter your credit card details?

Good question, I go to the states every month, and this would be the perfect solution for me, and a lot of my colleagues...

I don't see why at&t wouldn't want our money...

If you just need a card with a US address you can get a prepaid Visa or Mastercard gift card from any supermarket and then set the address to anything you want at the gift card website.

Thanks mate. Are they rechargeable? And, do you have any suggestions?

They generally aren't rechargeable.

Usually you can get them in demoninations of $20, $50, $100, or "set your own value" from $20 to $500, and they have an activation fee ranging from like $1.99 to $5.99.

I'm heading to the US twice in the next seven weeks.
I usually live in Australia.

I was hoping to buy a 64GB 3G iPad in Orlando Florida on 11 May.
I understand I can buy an iPad in store with an Australian credit card no problems.

Will I be able to activate it in store via iTunes (I have heard yes)?

Will I be able to sign up for an AT&T unlimited account using an Australian credit card?
What about an AT&T billing address?

So it doesn't look like I can? These supermarket pre paid credit cards... how do they work if there is no billing address?
Could I use my Aust credit card and my hotel address (I guess not if it checks credit card address with billing address?

I'm in Orlando Florida 10 - 18 May and then New York City 5 - 14 June.
Using the AT&T unlimited - it is cheaper than the hotel daily rate for internet - and was wanting to sign up to AT&T unlimited on my iPad - so was keen to get an iPad asap... and then use it as my primary way of communicating (email / internet etc).

Then come home - iPad will be released here by then - and merely just cancel my AT&T account - pull out the microSIM and sign up with my usual Aussie carrier and put a new microSIM in it!

Can any one help with my questions?
I would hate to have to wait until I return to Aust to get my iPad... I want it now!

Hey mate. I'm on the the same boat as you, as I go to the States almost every month, and this was going to be my internet solution while there.

No one seems to have any answers, so I was wondering if you wouldn't mind posting on here what you find when you go to the states as my next trip is a few days after yours...

Thanks!

It will cost you $3 a month, but you can buy these at WM (and they are similar to the Green Dot cards you can get other places - the WM fees I think are still the cheapest). You can buy refills in a ton of places and can add them via the phone or online.

you will get a card with your name on it, but it will take 7-10 days. You *might* be able to get it overnight by paying, you'd have to dig thru the website and see.

The company that does it for WM is this one:

https://www.greendotonline.com/Contents/Login.aspx

I've had both, and now just have the WM version, and have had no issues with it for the last 2 years. It doesn't pop-up as a gift card either. You'd obviously need to have some sort of address to use that was valid.

The only time you can run into problems is paying for gas with it and the amount they hold.

Hopefully you can make this work for you!

Thanks mate, but I've had a look at those cards before, and it's always the same problem when signing up, they require a social security number to open the account, which as a non-resident, I don't have. I have several usable US addresses, so that wouldn't be a problem.

Again, thanks for the info...

Oh man, you are right. It had been so long that I forgot about that.

AT&T need to sell cards the data service. I bet we will see something like that, but leaving feedback wouldn't hurt either.

Ugh. I will keep thinking for you!

Can do...
there is another thread in here that initially looked promising - with one of the pre paid visa card systems over there... but I've also read conflicting information with regard to this.
Now with AT&T coming out and saying why they have the home address must match credit card address... I'm less confident.

So now my dilemma might be - buy one next week in Florida - activate it - but not use AT&T... just WiFi?
Still means I bring one back to Australia before they are released here.

Doesn't solve my return trip though to New York City...
so still a few days till I leave - so still hoping to a work around or solution!

I'm also from Australia, and I'm heading over to oralando on the 16th may. Would be great if we could use 3G while over there!

Found another thread over at the Apple discussions...

Now that AT&T have split billing address and service address...
seems some are reporting success with pre paid visa + using hotel address.

Anyone else (non US citizen) managed to get through the AT&T data activation process?
Did you use your normal credit card - and what biling / service addresses did you use?

If you just need a card with a US address you can get a prepaid Visa or Mastercard gift card from any supermarket and then set the address to anything you want at the gift card website.

That is the way to go, but buy a gift card, not a regular prepaid credit card, you need a social security number for those.
