Hi

I'm trying to find out whether anyone has successfully begun using a normal O2 PAYG sim card in the UK, with a locked, US 2G iphone running v2.0 (never previously activated with Apple, ATT or O2), since the policy changed yesterday:

http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone/usinganoriginaliphone

i've read reports that this definitely works with a UK iphone that was previously activated on contract in the normal way; but wondered if apple now allows activation using an O2 payg sim, in a locked US-origin phone running v2.0?

The new o2 web+wifi bolt-on looks attractive - so if anyone has had success with this I'd be really grateful to hear.

Cheers

I'm wondering about this too. I've just bought a 3G and my old iPhone was bought in New York before they were launched in the UK. I did hear that previous versions of the software were supposed to accept O2 PAYG SIMs without any unlocking. I did try this out a while ago but it wasn't having any of it.

I had thought that all iPhones were identical the world over, but I'm not sure whether there is still something in the hardware that identifies it as a US phone.

I might give it another go with 2.0 soon if O2 ever get round to giving me service on the new one

hey guys. i had an at&t original iphone. been using it in uk for almost 10 months now after mucking about with ziphone. went into o2 shop last week and was told firmware upgrade would detect o2 sim and let me activate. unfortunately it hasnt and im stuck with unsupported sim screen. from speaking to CS i've to get a new iphone compatible sim. going to try it out 2m so will let you know. from browsing forums some people seem to have success. to date ive tried 3 different payg sims with no joy. there might be some info on the phone telling it its american (because it still picks up at&t sim) otherwise maybe the ones ive been using cant be picked up by the iphone hardware.

has anyone had any joy doing this?
