Using OSX Photos and Lightroom

Hi All,

I have browsed this thread and rather than hijack that, I thought it would be best to start a new one.

I am a heavy lightroom user, but since the birth of my son both my wife and I have been taking a lot of pictures with our iPhones and using the photos app as a carry around album.

This is great in the ease of syncing between devices and adding to shared albums, but is causing havoc with trying to integrate this with lightroom.

What I would like to achieve:-

• Continue using iOS and OS X photos as a personal family album.
• Continue using the iOS camera and pulling all those photos into lightroom. This will be my master store of photos, where I select favourites, create collections, keyword and tag faces.
• Be able to simply manage which pictures on the my wife and my iDevices are new photos to pull into Lightroom, or 'favourites' to keep on the devices / iCloud.

It is the third point that is causing me problems. How do I cleanly separate photos to be removed and ingested into Lightroom from both mine and my wife photos apps (we both have OSX and iOS devices) from this we wish to keep on the devices?

Unfortunately, there's no easy way to do this. Lightroom and Photos don't "talk to each other". If you have a Creative Cloud subscription, then you can use Lightroom Mobile to help sync the photos from your iPhone/iPad to Lr on your Mac. Otherwise, you'll have to connect your iPhone to your Mac to download them to Lr.

Maybe I'm missing it, but during import Lr will ignore duplicates when my iPhone is selected as an import source.

Or create a workflow where you somehow mark and designate images in Photos, export, import into Lr, then export again if you want. Think of the phone as a giant SD card, so that you're only gonna import some new ones and leave the old ones behind. Then on the phones it doesn't matter what gets deleted cuz the keepers are in Lr.

The big problem is Apple's closed shop, in that not much can be done with the images in the Lr library without exporting them, and ditto with the iPhone's library. So you copy out some, and then import back the finished images.

Or try Mylio; it does a much better job of synching and integrates very well with Lr, including reading Lr image adjustments.
