Using other media players

Golly, I've never posted on the basic board before. It's times like these when you realise just how engrained you are in the mac way of life. Anyway here goes, straightforward question...

How do I get it so that when I stick a music CD in my G5, the CD will load and play into another media player such as WMP Or Real Player? I have WMP selected as my default player in preferences, but when I stick in the CD immediatley become AIFF format, and won't open in any other player but iTunes. I know Apple makes sure songs downloaded from the iTunes store can only be played in its own software, but surely its not the same for CDs? I want to get them into WMA or mp3 format.

Windows Media Player on the Mac is pathetic at best and the team who created RealPlayer need to be shot. I'm almost certain WMP will not be able to play those files without conversion and I guess RealPlayer would be the same. The app I use to convert CDs is...


Yep, you guessed it, iTunes.

iTunes will play, convert and store these songs for you, so why bother with an alternative?

Yeah, you choose the format iTunes converts to in the iTunes Preferences in the Advanced section, under the Importing tab. Then you insert the disk and import the tracks.

I can't imagine why someone would want to use an app other than iTunes. It does everything better than other players, both Mac and PC. (In my opinion)

Real Player is a lot better for Mac than it is for Windows.
