Using PB with lid closed

I've searched through the archives and read previous posts on the matter, but . . .

I'm having trouble getting my PB to cooperate with the whole external-monitor-lid-closed thing. I have an external USB keyboard and mouse connected, and a monitor via DVI. I hit every key on the keyboard and it won't awaken, nor with a mouse click. I have to open the PB.

Is there a trick? Am I just stupid?

This is a 1 GHz PB 17, with a Dell 24" LCD screen and a regular old keyboard and mouse. OS X 10.4.3.

Did you plug in the power adapter? I'm pretty sure it is required.

Well, gee.

Turns out, I had plugged the dongle into the Mac, but not the transformer into the wall.
