One of my main reasons for getting an iPad was for its ebook functionality.
My profession calls for me to read a lot of orthopaedic journals to keep myself updated.I initially contemplated on getting a Kindle 2, but I decided to hold back till the release of the iPad. Now that the iPad has arrived, I immediately tested its functionality in terms of viewing PDFs. I must say that my decision was worth it.

After browsing through the various PDF readers available for the iPad, I decided to try out Goodreader, priced at the AppStore for $0.99.

Here is a short video of it. Please pardon the video quality because I only used my iPhone in taking it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkWpOV7CHms

Here is a link to Goodreader's homepage: http://www.goodiware.com/goodreader.html

It is well worth its price. The html uploading via wifi is okay for single file uploads. However if you wish to upload a batch of PDFs, it is best to mount it as a disk by using the "Connect to Server" option in Finder. Another nice feature is that it has preset settings if you want it to connect to your mailbox and download the files directly. I am having problems in trying to download the PDFs directly from my journal website since the site requires authentication prior to downloading. However I don't see this as a big issue since I normally download all of my journals directly to my MBP and then just copy to the iPAD those journals that I need.

I hope this enlightens those who have questions about PDF viewing in the iPAD.

Very nice :)

Is there any way to get pages side by side when using in horizontal?

I'll probably convert my cbr's to pdfs for this...

I've been searching for this feature but unfortunately I believe it is not yet supported. It would be nice to email the support team and recommend it as an additional feature to be included in the next update.

It's not an absolute must, but yeah, it would be nice.

Thanks for the answer :)

Anyone finding that their pdfs in GoodReader have darker images? I am a magazine publisher, and when I have used GoodReader, Air Sharing, or even just emailed myself a pdf, the pictures show up dark and the colors aren't accurate.

This might simply be due to the iPad's display being different than your computer monitor.

Displays are basically never consistent between devices. Is your computer monitor calibrated? Have you tested the iPad vs other devices/monitors?

I have my portfolio on my iPad, and things look ok so far. I haven't tested PDFs myself, I'll take a look when I get home today.

No problems on my end. Have you checked the Nightmode icon? It might be turned on.

This app is way underpriced. Its better than competitiors that are charging $5.99 - 9.99. I like how it remembers your last place.

scott.

I agree. GoodReader is better than Papers for basic PDF functionality, and I paid way more for Papers. I haven't even fired it up since installing GoodReader.

This is one of those apps I would happily pay $10 for, and is a STEAL for $0.99. If you don't have it yet, get it now - a must have app for the iPad.

Has anyone sent their PDF's from Dropbox? I'm not seeing Dropbox options in the settings of Goodreader???

Best PDF Reader

This is definitely the best PDF viewer. My only problem is that it is a bit sluggish. This was understandable on the iPhone, but I expected the iPad to be super smooth. If I load the same PDF into Apple's viewer, it isn't slow at all. I'm sure they are trying to solve the issue.

have you updated to the latest version? It is much snappier, really.

The only thing I'd change about Goodreader is their app icon. :p Heck I'd be willing to make one for them. Lime green and silver, I mean, really?!

I agree it isn't the best, but it is far from the worst. Comic Book Mobi's icon is like a 55 Cadillac ran into Jackson Pollack. Unfortunately, the theme continues throughout the app.
