My previous internal hard drive crashed and I recently installed a new one. Would it hurt to plug the old drive into the USB to see if I might could recover some old files from there? The actual drive said it couldn't be repaired but the Mac hd partition looked fine. Any help is appreciated thanks.

You can put the old drive in an external enclosure and try to mount it. You might be able to retrieve files from it. There's no harm in trying.

What if I don't have an external enclosure then it won't work?

SATA drves requires power. Your cable probably won't power it.

I suggest getting a USB to SATA DOCK. Even if your old drive may not work, you can still get drives to use with it.
