Can I get my prior backup that I did before running Blackra1n on or do I have to do it the old fashion PITA way?

It technically was but ya it's set up as a new phone and syncing contacts the old fashioned way right now....

I'd go with the prior back up, I've been using a backup since my original iPhone, 5 iPhone's ago and my iPhone always works flawlessly. :)

If you have jailbroken since you made the backup, your firmware is not the same whatever the number in Settings>General>About. That's the whole point of the jailbreak...it fundamentally alters the OS.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3GS (JB3.1, unlocked): Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7C144 Safari/528.16)

Same here. Unless restoring the backup actually causes problems, you should definitely use it. I always do and my 3GS works great.
