I recently bought the new iPad Pro 11” and I am very much enjoying using it over my six year old Air. I quite often spend long hours working away from home and have been using Sony’s PS4 Remote Play application on my MacBook to play games in my spare time. Being able to essentially bring my PS4 with me wherever I go is brilliant and at the moment it is one of the things I do that the iPad does not seem quite ready to do.

Whilst the iPad is capable of remotely viewing the PS4 video output through a third-party application; the official Sony application is only available on the Mac OS, I have some queries as to wether it is worth investing in.

An app named R-Play seems capable of replicating the official Remote Play application functions. Has any one used this app or has any experience with it? Are you able to use an official PS4 controller with the app? Has any one spotted an article suggesting Sony is bringing an official app to the App Store?

I am aware that there are issues with game stores that bypass the App Store; the case of Steam releasing a LAN remote desktop app that was ultimately rejected, but I’m hoping for official support.

In the case of using a controller, a wired connection is needed for the Mac OS PS4 Remote Play application. Is it possible to use the PS4 controller with the iPad Pro connected to the USB-C port?

Thanks in advance for any responses!

I have R-Play- it works with the official DS4 controller - but only when near the PS4 itself . The controller is still connected to the PS4 and it’s essentially a workaround as you need to create a new account on the PS4 to remote in. But it does work.

To use r play remotely you would need a controller that can connect to the iPad. The ps4 controller can’t (isn’t MFI). There are options (steelseries Nimbus) but - they don’t support R3 and L3 buttons.

However - a new option is coming soon that should bring R3 and L3 button support

It looks like they are planning for the new iPads too as it’s going to support usb c

I have been waiting for years for the ipad to get remote play support, i don't even care if I have to be near the PS4, I just want to be able to play my PS4 in bed.

The R play app should work for what you want then. I use it when someone else is using the tv

but it lost me on the creating of new account. I want to be able to access my saves
You don’t lose your saves.
You have to create an account that you use to remote in on. Once your remoted in you switch user to your normal account - and use that as usual.
Why you can’t just remote in on your normal account I don’t know (it disconnects the controller) but the workaround (remoting in on another account and then switching user once connected) works perfectly fine.

I’m probably not explaining it that clearly but the app instructions are simple to follow.

If you want to play PS4 on your iPad screen with your existing saves and using your normal controller you absolutely can currently - just have to be near enough to the PS4

Great reply, good insight. I wonder what would happen with a USB cable despite not being MFI. I’m likely to buy one in the run up to Christmas so I’ll chip in again if some one hasn’t already shedded light on this subject.

Cheers.

and just to confirm, we are talking about the $11.99 app?

I own both R-play (allows me to use my PS4) and Onecast (the same with my Xbox One).

They both work pretty well and share the same interface. R-play has the advantage of allowing real remote play: I can connect from anywhere in the world to my PS4 and play Spider-man.

It’s already been said that you Mifi controllers don’t allow R3 and L3 buttons. You have to emulate them with combinations of other buttons and it can be cumbersome.
