Using Pwnage Tool To Only Unlock 1st Gen iPhone

I am new to pwning the iPhone, but have read up as much as possible before asking this question. I have a 1st Gen and am unlocking for a buddy to use on T-Mobile. I don't really need the third party apps, as the app store is enough for me. I just need to unlock the phone.

I have watched videos and reviewed other threads about unlocking and jailbreaking the iPhone with the Pwnage Tool. I know how to do what I am looking for...just go into the expert mode and deselect the Installer Beta and Cydia, but I was wondering if there are an adverse effects to using the Pwnage Tool to only unlock the iPhone.

what you need:

• get the a copy of pwnage tool, say 2.0.1 or 2.0.2
• don't get 2.0.3 yet -- it has a bug, 2.0.3.1 was just released, read some reaction from public first...
• download iPhone1,1_2.0.2_5C1_Restore
• download iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore
• (make sure it's iPhone1,1...)
• Use the pwnage tool to pwn 2.0.0 for a custom restore
• click iPhone (left), choose expert mode
• General Settings: check all 3 blocks, leave bootneuter default
• uncheck all custom packages, uncheck all custom logos
• build.
• after building, put iPhone into DFU, follow instructions
• in iTunes, option+restore with custom firmware
• LEAVE IT!!! things will flash on your phone (including bootneuter) until you see the springboard. it will take about 10min
• in iTunes, click option+update with 2.0.2 firmware
• after 10min, you'll see the springboard again.

as long as apple doesn't update the baseband for the 1st gen iPhone, you're safe to update to the newest firmware (it, however, is not jailbroken -- but like you said, you don't need it). read around before you update to a newer version.

if you want a jailbroken iphone you must wait for the newest pwnage tool and pwn a custom firmware. thereafter you must RESTORE every time you update your firmware. (you can later set up as a existing phone).

Are you sure that upgrading to 2.0.2 (with an iphone that has been pwnd with Pwnage 2.0.2 and apple software 2.0.1) will only remove the jailbreak and still leave the phone unlocked??

I am under the impression that updating a pwned iphone with itunes update will re-lock and un-jailbreak the phone.
Please clarify if you know otherwise. I also do not care to have the Cydia and installer or third party crapps.

he's right. I upgraded from jailbroken and unlocked 2.0.1 to 2.0.2 through iTunes in a legit way. Jailbreak is gone, but the unlock stays, this is on the first gen. It's the best way of having an almost legitimate unlock

jailbreak and unlock firmware 2.0.1, then just plug your iphone to iTunes and download and install the update to 2.0.2
