Ok, so I know you can't currently unlock an iPhone 3G 2.2 if you previously used QuickPwn to jailbreak it. Currently, I really just want to jailbreak my iPhone. However, I may need to unlock the phone for an overseas trip in 6 months. However, as this is uncertain, and I'm a bit new to this, I would rather just use QuickPwn to jailbreak the iPhone at this point (since it's a simpler process). If I decide to unlock the phone at a later date, can I just restore the phone to factory settings and then use PwnageTool to jailbreak it -- preserving the unlock-ability of it?

You can unlock any 3g iphone (even if it has the latest baseband) with yellowsn0w, it was released on new years eve. All you need is a jailbroken iphone with cydia, the source for yellowsn0w and wifi to install it.
