Subject: Using Samsung 970 EVO Plus blades in devices other than the Sonnet PCIe card ?

I have on hand my new Sonnet PCIe x16 card along with 1x 2TB and 3x 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus blades, that I intend using with my MP7,1 when it arrives.

I assume the Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD/Flash blades can also be used in other units as apposed to the Sonnet PCIe x16 card.

Can others indicate what other compatible MP7,1 devices are capable of employing the Samsung 970 EVO Plus blades without any issues ?

Thanks... :)

I'm using the same Samsung Evo Plus cards, all 2TB in a RAID 0 array in a HighPoint 7101A-1 card in my Mac Pro 7,1. Native RAID software with the card. The drivers installed fine but only worked after disabling Secure Boot. Pro tip: Don't use APFS + encryption when formatting your drive. See my before and after speeds, slow is with APFS + encryption, fast is just APFS alone.

Gosh.... that is very impressive for sure. The newer Highpoint SSD7102 is available but at a much higher price point than for the 7101A-1.

Actually the 7103 replaces the 7102 and doesn't seem to be better in any way. In fact, you can crosslink two 7101A-1's for huge performance. Based on that I just stuck with the 7101A-1.

Are you not disturbed by the massive noise of the HighPoint? What about the Sonnet Card? Is the noise lower than with HighPoint?

Note above, I replaced the fan. Also, it appears that the newer versions of the HighPoint will actually let you *disable* the fan in a Mac Pro 7,1, since they view the cooling as adequate. I need to test this with mine, but in the meantime the fan I used has made mine essentially totally silent.

And to quote:

User Controlled Cooling Solution
The 2019 Mac Pro was designed for thermal efficiency. The innovative chassis ventilation and powerful cooling apparatus ensure your PCIe devices can operate at peak performance, free from the threat of overheating.
HighPoint NVMe solutions capitalize on this design by offering an optional Silent Mode for the SSD7100 series RAID controllers. Customers that require a working environment with minimal noise can now fully disable the SSD7101A-1 or SSD7110’s internal fan.

Can you post the link for the fan you used? Would be great to read whether disabling the fan is a permanent or temperature regulated measure? Thanks

This fan from DigiKey would work and allow you to have the PWM pinout to control turning the fan on/off:

I used the non-PWM version, although it did have a solder pad for the PWM cable, so maybe it's actually a PWM fan after all. This was the fan I used:

I'm using x4 Samsung 970 EVO Plus blades in a HighPoint 7101A.

Set up RAID 0 with the HighPoint drivers (APFS no encryption).

Disk Speed Test result attached.

I have unplugged and removed the fan on my PCB and only running slightly hotter at this stage.

Awaiting an email response from HighPoint regarding there "optional Silent Mode"

Crikey...... almost 10 GB/s for reading.

Keep us posted! Those speed results are very similar to what I'm getting with the same setup.

Both of those fans are only 2.9 CFM. I'm sure there are higher CFM rated fans available.

Right but the 2.9 CFM is perfectly adequate. In fact, with the new fan and the front of the shroud removed on my card, the drives are now running 5 C cooler than with the stock fan. Better yet, it's silent again.

No one knows...HighPoint just has a teaser page up for the Mac Pro, and the link that was active to the "Mac Pro 2019 FAQ" was disabled--it had been a 404 dead link anyway. With the holiday I'm sure they're not doing much and we'll all know more soon.

OK, if it's working great. But what about summer temps ?

Although slightly bigger, this 60mm x 10mm x 10mm fan distributed by Ainex which is possibly only available here in Japan is 16.14 CFM and about ¥1,000 / US$9.

I adapted it to USB power and use it for cooling my Northbridge. It runs 100% silent.

Of course it is probably the wrong size for an IOCrest card but could be adapted..

Digikey shipping costs are criminal. 😎

That seems like massive overkill, and I don't know if the pinout on the card can supply the 2.6W for the fan; the DigiKey and stock ones are in the under 1W range. The fact that most of the new cards for the new Mac Pro have NO fans and even HighPoint is now saying the fan can be disabled would imply an even higher CFM fan is totally unnecessary. The DigiKey fan is also ducted to blow air across the card when mounted flat on it.

As for summer temps, I don't know about you, but my Mac Pro is in a climate controlled office. The temps range from 65-75F at all times all year round.
