Using Super Duper

Hi everyone.

Im gonna use Super Duper for the first time to make a full backup of my system. I wanna know if the full backup option copies the system files of Mac OS X. I just read on the manual that it doesnt. I was hoping it would copy everything.

For example, my OS X is 10.6.4. If I do the full backup will the 6.4 update backup too or when restoring the full backup I will need to update again from 6.2?

SuperDuper is a terrific program. I have it run daily at 6 am to backup my entire system. It creates a bootable backup and completely backs up the system. Be sure to disable all auto sleep functions first. Also, close all running programs. You need to select "backup all files" not "backup user files". Once a full backup is completed, you can boot from it. Also, if you do a restore, it will restore the system in its entirety as it was when the backup was created including all system updates. After your first backup all files is done, be sure to select "Smart Update" for subsequent backups. SuperDuper will only backup files that have changed. It will take a fraction of the time it took when first used. The manual explains all this and it deserves a careful read before using the program.

Yes, it copies everything. When my hard drive in my macbook recently died, I was able to boot from my superduper backup and was able to use the exact same computer that I was use to. While using it I googled how to replace the hard drive and bought one, which was a lot cheaper than having apple do it.

Get this done as soon as you can, just incase...

So what how about super duper vs time machine. Who wins and why???

I think Super Duper is more for files to back up to an external and time capsule is a back up of the entire OSX, programs, and state of your OS

I use both, and both have proven to be valuable for different recoveries. SuperDuper provides a bootable image backup that I keep offsite for disaster recovery. TimeMachine is a "poor man's version control system" allowing one to easily go back in time to recover deleted or messed up files.

Ah yes...

Whenever I would put a new bigger larger boot drive in my G5 tower I'd use SuperDuper to do it - transfer old boot drive to new. Great program.

CCC is another program that is used for comparison. If you are unsure which is better for you, you will be probably be even more confused after reading through this... HA.

SuperDuper clones the entire boot disk. If your boot disk crashes, you can run off the SuperDuper clone a lot more quickly than you can restore to a new HD from time machine.
