iPad Using the Ipad Pro or Air to shoot video to upload to youtube

I was looking into mirrorless cameras or any great cameras for filming vlogs and YouTube vids....and then I started wondering if a lot of people actually did this with the IPAD Pro or Air. I would assume the better camera is on the pro (and I know that it is capable of filming in 4K). I tried to search the forum but i could not find a post regarding this subject. I was going to buy an iPad and just started doing research and it occurred to me that I could possibly kill 2 birds with one stone ( as opposed to buying a mirrorless/DLSR camera AND an iPad OR just buying an IPAD. I know that there are accessories (tripod, lighting) for this....but again I when i search using an IPAD for vlog, or YouTube vids I don't see many posts.

Any thoughts?

If you Google "vlogging ipad pro", there's a lot of info out there. If I were looking at this, I'd also strongly consider my secondary uses beyond vlogging - a digital camera and an iPad are very different in this consideration. And will all your vlogging be stationary? Is a phone with a quality camera a possible consideration?

Not knowing your exact filming scenarios my comments may be irrelevant. You certainly could do it with an iPad pro but it would be awkward. An iPhone might be a bit better with the same or better quality and a telephone lens on some models. A DSLR solution opens up a world of opportunities - tripods, microphones, etc. If you have different shooting requirements a DSLR would be the most flexible.

If money is tight you don't have to go mirrorless. They are other DSLRs which would work better than an iPad and can be bought safely (good warranty and return policy) and relatively inexpensively from reputable places such as KEH.

I have filmed with an iPad Pro before (for the convenience of being able to edit directly in lumafusion without needing to airdrop the footage over). However, the context is that I am a school teacher doing this for my students' public speaking presentation (to show them afterwards for review). Video quality was decent but not a top priority.

I had this iPad stand which I placed on a desk and used it to hold the iPad up, but I imagine it would be a pain to bring it around with you.

My advice is to invest in dedicated hardware if you plan on doing this professionally, and for the long run. Or in the least, use a smartphone with a gimbal stand for the portability. Cutting corners works in a pinch, but not if you actually want to make a living out of it.

I do a lot of video recording with my (older) iPad Pro 10.5 (as well as iPhone 11). Happy to answer any questions. I have multiple clamps and odds and ends etc. A lot of trial and error over the years to what works and what doesn’t.
Generally I record musical act in 3 hour blocks in 4K with Filmic Pro and use a Centrance Mixerface as my mic and interface (as well as back up audio recorder… love that thing). I use an iPad in the situation where it’s not obnoxious. My iPad is a 256, but if I were to upgrade someday, 512 is the way to go. I can give you a rundown of some of the gear I use and pros and cons etc. as well. I do everything in iMovie and in the photos editing app because my needs are simple, however audio I use various tools. Audio is more important than video in my opinion, especially as most devices these days capture video just fine.
You'll generally lose that distinct depth of field that a DSLR will bring, but it comes down to content. Personally, I couldn’t care less if a YouTube channel looks like a polished MKBHD tech video… I just want good content with a presentable backdrop. I basically did what You spoke of… decided to kill two birds with one stone. iOS video is fantastic and stable, and possibly the best in the business for mobile. At least that’s what the reviewers all seem to say repeatedly.
As mentioned Though, go with the 512. Makes a big difference not having to think about space after rendering. For my device 3hours is about 75 GB. Then you have to render, and that adds another 35 GB. Plus your own apps and media etc. It can fill up before you know it.
All that said… it seems you’re using a 14” MacBook Pro? Seems like half the battle is solved right there… why not just get a simple but good cam of sorts (with the ability for that depth of field) and just record straight to the MacBook With something like: https://www.elgato.com/en/cam-link-4k

Space definitely is a concern. If you are doing a 4K capture so that the video doesn't look like a vhs tape in future years you need to double that number to something like 50 GB an hour.

Luckily (for me) it’s more about just capturing and archiving. I don’t wanna get caught up in the 4K 8K 12K arms race.
This is good enough for my needs. Yes a dslr 4K would be better, but meh, it’s a hobby.
