Using the MBP's speakers with an MP3 player

This is hopefully a simple question that someone will be able to quickly answer for me! I just want to connect my MP3 player up to my Macbook Pro and play the music through its speakers.

I tried connecting it to the Line In but obviously the sound doesn't come out of the speakers. It works when recording sound, say in Garage Band. But how do I get it to always output the sound in real time?

Is there a simple, staring me in the face, setting I can change or some program I can download? Unfortunately my MP3 player isn't compatible in Mac OS and so I'm missing out on all my music!
