iPod Using the new Apple Dock connector to USB cable on an old iPod model.

Just want to make sure. It is NOT a good idea to use the new version of the dock connector to USB cable (the one that's smaller and has no pressure points) on an older iPod model, right? The cable could get stuck, thus damaging both my iPod, and my cable, am I correct?

No issues here, using iPod Classic 8G cable with iPod 3rd and 4th Gen. Working fine and disconnects easily.

+1 not a problem

The old cable with the push buttons had little pins to help hold it in place. The connectors themselves are pretty snug and so it's not really necessary.

I'm randomly using older and newer cables with various hardware:
iPhones don't have any problems with cables, clips or no. *
Old iPods don't have any problems with cables, clips or no.

And no; it doesn't get locked. If you look closely, the buttonless ones have a sloping outer edge to the pins (allowing them to be pulled out the same style holes), while the old ones were at perfect right angles.

* - ok, I guess the FireWire cable is less than usable...

Nope. The new cables don't have the locking pins, so it will just pull in and out like normal.

New USB Dock cable + old iPod = no problem
Old USB Dock cable + new iPod = no problem
