Hi

I have a MacBook Air M2. I purchased a Samsung USB Bar Plus with advertised speeds of 3gb transfer in seconds.

My black magic speed test showed 1456+ read and write. Which really confused me.

Then I transferred a 17GB music file to the USB and it took 7 to 10 minutes.

I contacted Samsung and asked them to explain my Black Magic speed test and the 7 to 10 minutes transfer time.

Their answer was that they had no control over the computer I was using and perhaps the manufacturer had built in software to the device, that sped up read and write on USBs. And that transferring a 17GB file over 10 minutes was normal.

The usb is running on Fat 32. It has been suggested that I go to disk utility and change the file system to APFS which will speed up my transfer. I do not wish to do this because I want to keep the USB for use outside of Apple OS.

Could somebody please explain the 1456+read and write speeds and alosif those speeds are correct, why is it taking 10 minutes to transfer a 17GB file.

Thank you

Are you sure you were testing the Samsung Bar with the Blackmagic speed test? You have to speficially select the target drive that you want to test by clicking on the gear icon. If you did select it correctly, then the results that you got are clearly wrong as the Samsung Bar is only rated for 200MB/sec write.

There could also be some speed losses depending on which USB-A to USB-C adapter that you're using. You might need to look at that as well.

Very many thanks for your helpful reply. I am using the apple C to A usb cable and after the latest test, the write speed is 109 and the read speed is 317 mbs. I did not select the correct drive previously. This is all new to me. So, thank you for your help.
