Sup. First let me say I've never had a gaming console. I liked playing Unreal Tournament on my old mac and want to get UTIII when it comes out. I'll have a PS3 by then (to play blu-ray movies) and a new 8 core MacPro + 4GB, 8800, 30" CD. Which system should I buy UTIII for?

Since you have that powerful machine, get it for Mac. It's always better to play games on PC (except from racing) if you have the chance. The graphics might be better, too.

Mac Pro with 8 cores and GeForce 8800 GT would kills PS3 by miles, Intel is faster than PPC, that what PS3 use PPC based.

If optimization was done on both (remember only a few select games utilize more than one core on the PC platform), the Cell processor is better.

@ BornAgainMac -

The PS3 version natively supports mouse and keyboard.

Peace

Actually, this isn't true. Intel is fater than OLD PPC's (single cores, remember?) but we are talking about 7 cores here, all dedicated to gaming algorithms. Sorry, but any read of all PS3 specifications (and technologies adopted by the Cell processor) will show that it is faster than most of today's high-spec gaming rigs. And there are a lot of other parameters you should take into account, which I am too bored to analyze here, like platform implementation, ease of optimization, resource management (ps3 does not run an entire OS behind it, at least not when it plays games, and also every game on PS3 will utilize many cores, but that doesn't always happen on PC's and Macs... If it does, only 2 are taken advantage of).

You should never judge the potential of any gaming console just by comparing absolute numbers. Read further the technical details... ;)

The only reason I am suggesting he gets UT3 for Mac is because he will have access to many other things the PS3 version won't like more mods, the unreal editor, better support, and improved mouse-keyboard support.

Don't forget that the PS3 gameplay is approximately 20% slower than on the computer. UT is just too damn fast for the console.

I won't be buying it until they bring out a Mac Native Version with Editor and i can use my username that Gamespy stole.

However - if your going to play it online in multiplayer mode, it might be best to go with PS3 strictly because there will be more users than those with a mac so the competition will be slightly better.

Go with the Mac version (preferably the Windows version) it will run better than the PS3 (even if you have the X1900XT though not the 7300GT or the HD 2600) and overall it will just be a better experience what with all the mods and flexibility the Mac/Windows version of the game offers, yeah the PS3 one has mods too (I think) but the level of freedom is not nearly the same.

But really, I would try to go with the Windows version, it will run better and support and mod compatibility will be more solid with it as well.

The 8 core xeons and the 8800GT have far more horsepower than the cell and the 7800gt equivalent that the PS3 uses. If anything, the mac pro's going to give you a smoother experience with higher frame rates and a better control with the keyboard and mouse.

I would tell you go with the PS3 version because it feels like UT3 was made for the PS3....it runs smooth and basically the same as the PC version.

All the mods can be cooked for the PS3....there are alot of mods that can run on the PS3....even the mod that makes the game run just as fast as the PC version.

The only reason I would tell you to get the mac version because of the resolution....if you want a high(er) res then by all means support the mac version...both are good.

also the PS3 version supports KB/Mouse function and the sweetest thing about UT3....3rd person camera control:)

Bless

PC/Mac would have far more players online, plus it's easier to get Mods on (or if you really wanted to you could make your own) and it runs at the games native speed. The PS3 version had to be slowed down.

Thats just not true....there are MORE if not equal amount of players on the PS3 version than the PC/Mac. The mods are not hard at all...its basically the same as the PC...it just needs to be cooked(which is provided with the mod software)

theres not much seperating the pc and PS3 version....so get whatever you are happy with.

I notice MacSoft is now saying spring instead of early 2008 I wonder just how long this port will take and how many things have to be changed? I mean come on they all are using Intel & the same graphics so just how much software needs to be redone to get the thing to run on Mac?
If thinking between Mac & Playstation a Playstation may have you playing this year.

You might be right there, it's only racked up 0.18 million sales on the PS3 but I can't even find PC figures. Anywhere!

OP- the PC version got a gamerankings score of 83%, whereas the PS3 version got 85%. Make of that what you will. Maybe the PS3 hasn't got that many solid FPS titles so they rated the better ones higher (comparative review)?

All I know is that I have played it on my PS3 at 1080p and it runs as smooth and fast as butter. I have yet to experience 'any' kind of slowdown or framerate issues.

Have experienced a little lag on multiplayer games, but then its not out in Europe yet so I'm playing against peeps the other side of the world. I'm sure my game experience will improve once the european servers are up.

Personally I would go with the PS3 if you have one simply to avoid windows but that's a personal pref and if it doesn't bother you - just go for whatever rocks your boat....
