Hi,
I have a macbook pro running 10.8.2 mountain lion, and found that the internet was running really slow, speediest.net showed variances between 0.5Mb and 8Mbps (I should be on 18Mbps with Teksavvy Canada)
More importantly the latency when checking pings to google.ca was around 800-1400ms, which caused to internet to be very unstable.
I was on the case to Teksavvy for weeks who could find no problem, eventually I dug out my old windows based laptop and checked the internet using that, and all seemed good- pings of 10-15ms and around 18Mb internet.
So, it seems that this was an apple-based problem. I called apple-care who talked me through uninstalling and re-installing the OS, and as a bare system all appeared good again, internet speed good, low ping (10-15ms)
As soon as I downloaded a torrent using utorrent from pirate bay, I have the same internet issue back again!
I have just re-installed the OS and it's back to what it should be..... Any ideas why torrent/pirate bay may be causing this, and what I can do to avoid it?
Many thanks in advance!

It is called using the internet.

Torrents make many many many connections. You can swap your connection with torrents.

Sounds like you need to tune the settings to only allow 10 or 20 connections at a time and it should help.

This is normal, and there is not a problem to fix. You just need to tune your torrent program.

For me, uTorrent not only slows down my internet, but my whole computer. So basically everything gets slower when uTorrent running.

Try using Transmission; it works for me.

I just tried Transmission yesterday, everything faster, no lockups, no more memory full problem. So I deleted utorrent :)

(btw. Transmission takes minutes to quit, is it normal? I checked activity monitor, it seems it's moving files or something.)

If you get this problem again don't reinstall until you first try to fix it.

And, I start with a tip, if you delete or move to desktop /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and restart you're problems might be resolved, in this folder many if not all of the network settings are present.
after this many all settings are reset and you need to set up certain things again.
If this does not help delete the newly made folder and drag the original back, restart and everything is back to what it was before.

It shouldn't be taking minutes to quit. Should be no more than 10 secs when transmission takes this time to check your files properly before exiting. I might be wrong but it should take this long unless maybe you got some huge file downloading.
