I saw this yesterday, some good ideas. I kind of agree that Apple should really begin to branch of iOS on the iPad - further differentiating it from the iPhone and making it more of it's own thing. They have in recent years, but they can do more. iOS 13 is rumored to have a heady iPad focus so maybe we start to see some similar features coming. The iPad and Apple's chip development is probably the most exciting part of Apple for me now. It feels like the early OS X days.

I really like all of those ideas. They're intuitive and look like something Apple could/would implement. I think with the next iOS we're going to start seeing some true divergence for the iPad software vs the iPhone, at least I hope we do.

Everyone is so focused on the UI and never on the internal OS functions. Like how ****** iMovie is on iOS and there’s no excuse when you are using it on a screen like the iPad Pro where there’s more real estate. How there’s no plug in support for adding fonts to apps or other templates to things like Pages. How we can’t add keywords, manually selected faces etc in Photos iOS. And so on.

That’s true, but there’s room to focus on both aspects. I think there’s a lot ahead for iPad with Adobe and pro apps. Apple is slowly opening more of that up, most recently with the “Files” app, which I realize could be improved.

and that goes both ways. not just what Apple is focusing on but also what randoms on boards like this could be focusing on. but they don't. they focus on the pretty UI nonsense

Add those three, and you have 99 percent Mac OS.

Apple knows that, and therefore, will do that only if they ever retire the Mac OS.

I agree, those are essential. But since that is software, Apple isn't so interested in that since they're primarily a hardware and service company now and those additions to iOS won't sell more hardware or services.

It would be nice if Apple stopped futzing around with multitasking, widget screen, and control center. Since each were introduced, Apple changes how they work with every major iOS release. This constant churn in how these work can be quite distracting when one owns more than 1 iOS device that is at a different iOS version.

The widget screen in iOS 10 was beginning to become very useful. In landscape mode, there were 2 columns of widgets. It worked and looked great on my Mini 4, Air 2, and 12.9 Pro. Starting with iOS 11, the widget screen is only a single column in landscape. It is so odd to see my Mini 4 (still on 10.x) have a nice 2 column widget screen yet the 12.9 Pro (on 12.x) have only 1. The sparse icon grid on the 12.9 Pro has been talked about to death, but it still has that "Fisher Price My First Tablet" feel to it.

There are some foundational limitations to iOS that will prevent the iPad from going much further unless Apple forks iOS into phone-optimized and tablet-optimized branches.

I think some of these ideas are quite good actually.

Maybe for your specific type of ‘productivity’ but mine is just fine without a ‘true’ file management or a mouse. I’ll give you that the multitasking could use some work.

Now if you wanna talk about a common file box, even without user access to it, so that I don’t have to constantly import, tweak, export for every app and end up with 16 copies of something in 16 apps, yes that could be useful for all users.
