Hey Everybody,

I'm using a 24" iMac, mid 2007, 8g RAM, OSX 10.8.5, and a 13" MacBook Pro 9,2, 8g RAM, OSX 10.8.5. Both are wonderful, but as I have moved them up the 'OSX' evolution I just moved the antique iPhoto v7.1.5 forward. Yes, I know that was not smart……

So,,, If I upgrade both to El Captain v10.11.3 that has 'Photo' will all my photo's from 'iPhoto' move into it without me having to do a 'Hokey-Pokey-Chicken-Dance' to make it happen….. that would make my wife and dog crazy. The upgrade is hard enough on them….

Thanks for any input…..

As long as you just do an upgrade install of El Capitan and not an erase and install, then yes, all your photos will still be there in the iPhoto library. Then the first time you start Photos on El Capitan it will give you a popup window offering to convert the iPhoto library to a Photos library. After the conversion you will have bot a Photos and iPhoto library, but they will not use double the space like you would think. Give this a read.

OP:

I would suggest that you leave the iMac "back at" 10.8.5.
Yes, I realize the OS is "growing older", but you may be unhappy with the overall performance you get with El Capitan. This is one of those YMMV things, as different individuals perceive "performance" differently.

Does the MacBook Pro have an SSD?
Is it upgradeable to be able to install an SSD?
If so, that's a better candidate for an El Capitan upgrade.

Also -- be aware that you can still use iPhoto with El Capitan, BUT, you have to use the final version 9.6.1. It's available from the App Store, but you must first delete the old copy of iPhoto and then download the new (final) version. There are "other ways" to get 9.6.1 if you have to resort to that route...

Weaselboy….

Large Thank You for the informative post. Yes, I'd be doing an upgrade not a 'wipe & install'. Nobody needs that kind of aggravation unless there is no way around it.

Your info gives me the comfort that "IF" I upgrade I will be able to use Photo with my library. Also I read the link and the links inside it. Good stuff! I kinda understand the 'magic' going on in the background.

I'll keep an eye on OSX v11.03 and maybe make the leap…..

Again, I thank you...

Fishrrman,,

I hear you about OS v10.8.5. Both our iMac and MBP are using the OS. I really like it, it's stable, but I hate to fall behind in the perverbal 'Upgrade' game. I was there once years ago with Windows, (puke, gag, barf). Very happy to have jumped off the WIN ship back in '07.

Anyway, given that both our Mac's are doing great with OS 10.8.5 and our only concern is with the antique iPhoto version I think I'll look into getting iPhoto v9.6.1 and staying where I'm at until new machines are necessary.

My problem is that I don't think I can install v9.6.1 unless I climb the hill installing several old 'iLife' versions. And to get them I have to buy from the likes of Amazon, but I'm gonna try…..! Am I wrong?

Oh,,, If I delete my antique version of iPhoto will I lose the "library" iPhoto files???? Or will just the application files go away???

I'll defer the El Captain upgrade until I'm at the edge of the upgrade cliff….. and have to.

Thank you for the post and great advise…….

I agree with Fishrrman, El Capitan seems to provide little benefits in OP case.

As for iPhoto if you can find v. 9 in Amazon or elsewhere it can be updated through Apple downloads. However 9.6.1 isn't possible because it requires Yosemite.

Deleting iPhoto will not have any effect on iPhoto library.

I recommend staying in Mountain Lion unless you need software that requires later OS.

Ebenezum,

I hear ya-bro…. More digg'n I do the more that I'm comfortable with OS v10.8.5 on both my machines. Well, at least for now.

I've already ordered iLife-11 from Amazon and I'll to the 'install & hop up the v9 ladder'. Then just relax and see what happens with El Crappetan… excuse me I meant El Capitan…….

Thank you for the pointers….!!

Glad to help.

I hope Apple seriously improves El Capitan, I had way too many problems with it...
