VAIO vs iMAC

Buying VAIOVPCL137FX over the IMAC 21.5-inch: 3.06GHz Intel Core i3 for my sister.

The VAIO will cost $800 because of black friday and it has core 2 Quad which I consider might be better option than the i3 but above all I think the price difference is why I am leaning towards the VAIO.

I want everyones opinion because I might still have a chance to change my mind....Thanks!!!!

Might want to think of thermal power design of both computers, the iMac might save more money over time, because the i3 will probably have better throttling and technologies to consume way less power. I'm not sure about the actual differences, but I do know core2quads have dramatically inefficient tdps.

As for power, that's tough to say. The core2quad might be better in programs that tax the cpu at their fullest potential and all threads, but the i3 has higher clock and better architecture, plus its own virtual threading.

Also do note the imac has a more powerful gpu, if she wants to game from time to time.

I would have gotten the iMac personally.

Please don't buy vaio
All in ones that are not made by apple have a very very high rate of failure. Sony has lost it's design edge and I don't really trust them.

A gift shouldn't be about cost, but rather about what the gift represents. And an iMac is a long term, flawless, virus less investment.

Personally I really struggle to repair all in ones (usually they get bad motherboards), iMacs are of a much higher quality.
My friends who work in tech support say that all in ones not made by apple have the highest rate of failure of all the computers their companies support.

It may be cheaper on the sales bill, but over the course of time an apple is much cheaper and has a constantly higher usabilty

how much do you hate your sister to consider as a present a sony vaio

sony has to be cheaper , they now even have to offer VAT return on top of lowered prices to get some sales


you can always install windows on the iMac if you think she could not handle OSX and if she really doesn't like it you will get nearly all your money back after christmas , while the sony will be worth just half what you payed for after a month usage

If your getting a windows machine then i would stay away from an all in one. I would get a small form factor one instead

What will her use of the computer be?

Could you please link to the computer so we can check out it's specs more thoroughly? I googled but only found ~$1700 machines.

My thoyghts exactly. The main difference between these two is the software, and on Windows is much more difficult maintaining the OS.

hi mac noobie here

personally i wouldn't recommend a vaio all in one either,
a few years back i bought a vaio vgc m1 nice looking bit of kit in its day and it did work well (for a windows machine) until about 18 months after purchase a small puff of smoke arose from the rear of it and it died permanently with a failed internal PSU, the cost of replacement was mad so was scrapped.
After that i did fair bit of research and found a lot of the same units were failing with the same fault, it appeared they couldn't handle the heat and read a lot of other makes suffer similar probs.
anyway just my experience talking, and so far loving this imac 27 (unfortunately so is the wife)

One was for my sister and the other for my mother. They won't be using it for intensive use other than web surfing and office stuff.

Hmm, it's a very good deal. I'd probably get that, sell it, and buy an iMac lol.
