I have a Mac Pro 1,1 and I've been looking for an adapter to put an SSD in it. We have a business account with microcenter and wouldn't have to pay shipping if I got this: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0347039

It looks like Vantec's version of Icy Dock. Anyone try this, or any thoughts as if it'd work? If it just converts to a 3.5" drive, the connectors should be in the correct place, right?

Also, if this wouldn't work- is there any reason i couldn't just use intel's 3.5" adapter and then connect a sata cable from the drive to the port that the sled would normally go into?

No, you can't just line it up. The adapters you are listing center the 2.5" drive. They are meant to be used in ugly beige towers with honking long cables running everywhere, so the orientation of the drive is unimportant.

The correct adapters do not center the drive, they offset it to one side precisely such that the 2.5" drive plugs directly into the backplane without cables. If the adapter doesn't say it's for the Mac Pro, it almost certainly will not work.

It might be possible to use a cheap adapter plus cables, but I'm not sure. Depending on where the screw holes are, they may place the drive too close to the backplane for the cable connectors. Besides, by the time you buy a power cable, a data cable, and a cheap adapter, you probably could have just bought a proper adapter.

You need to either get a proper adapter or buy a 3.5" SSD so you don't need an adapter in the first place.

People have made their own adapters, which will work; search around in the forum if you want to do that.

In the Apple Store chat, the guy claimed Apple's $$$$$$$ 512 gb one works with my Mac Pro 1,1...but there's a review on Amazon claiming otherwise.

Do you know if that would work?
