Various Artists Missing

I have noticed this when i was on iOS 8.4 beta before i moved to iOS 9 beta and various artists is still missing. It is really annoying because i have a lot of albums that have various artists and i have to search the name of the album to actually have it appear. Is anyone else having the same problem?

You have to switch the view to "compilations". Go to my music then click the button that says artists/albums/etc and switch it to compilations.

There is a work around you can do to make that album show up in albums/artists.

1. uncheck the "part of compilation" box in the get info section of the album
2. make the Album Artist = Album name.

example: I have the Rocky movie original sound track. It was tagged as a compilation of "various artists".

I renamed the album artist to "Rocky Movie" instead of various artist and unchecked compilaton.

The album itself still retains/displays the actual artist but for the sake of grouping it uses album artist instead.

You can indeed have various artists show up under the artist view and still have each individual track show who the actual artist is. You need to set it all up in iTunes first. (See image. Artist view and shows various without going into the compilation view.)

*if you look at the mini player at the very bottom I had a song playing from a compilation and shows the artist of the song (jel)*

Workaround? What workaround? iTunes is what you use to organize your library. If it's not set up the way you want it to be in iTunes then it won't on your phone.

Glad to see this functionality return in iOS 9. With 8.4.1 "Various Artists" does not appear (and yes, I have my Compilations tagged with "Various Artists" as Album Artist, and "Part of a Compilation" selected). This is how it looks in 8.4.1 (no "Various Artists" shown):

The "Group by Album Artist" setting used to be in iOS 8 but it disappeared in 8.4, and judging by what I see in 8.4.1 this feature is OFF with no way to turn it on. If the setting has returned in iOS 9, perhaps the OP has not enabled it.

No, that just changes how the Album menu is sorted.

What I'm referring to is literally the setting titled "Group by Album Artist" which was present in 8.3 and earlier. If set to ON, then your Compilations would show up in the Artist menu with whatever you entered as the Album Artist (typically "Various Artists"). With the setting OFF, your Compilations would show up in the Artist menu by the actual artist name is for each song of the Compilation.

OK, at least the iOS 9 behavior (i.e. ON) is how I prefer it ... hopefully that remains the case upon final release.

lagwagon, I don't know how you're seeing that, as my Compilations are definitely tagged as such yet I don't see Various Artists. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with it, but perhaps you're using iCloud Music Library and/or Apple Music (I keep both turned off). Or, in iTunes did you perhaps un-select "Part of a Compilation" yet leave Album Artist populated with Various Artists? That would give the results you see, but remove the album from Compilations.

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with it, but perhaps you're using iCloud Music Library and/or Apple Music (I keep both turned off). I am using IML and AM but that shouldn't have any real effect because both IML and old school USB syncing rely on how it's organized in iTunes. I'm pretty positive mine showed Various Artists before I even moved to iOS 9 though. Because I manual synced to my phone before I enabled all the Apple Music stuff. So more or less everything listed in my Artists view was built from the manual sync prior to AM. But I could be wrong on that. (7715 of the songs out of the 8227 on my phone currently are mine and were synced manually prior to turning on IML.)

As for how mine are set up in iTunes. "Get info" on an album has.

Artist: Mixed (but greyed out) this is because each individual track has the proper artist tagged.

Album: showing the compilation album name.

Album Artist: set to "Various Artists"

And the compilation box is checked.

All the same albums show in both the various artists in my artist view and the compilation view.

I vaguely remember having to uncheck and recheck the compilation box in order for it to sync correctly with VA showing.

Another note that I remember having to do as well is just trying to re sync changes over top an already synced library didn't always update the changes. So I had to fully remove all the music off the phone and fully re sync with the changes.
