VB and .NET Developers in the UK - Midlands?

Hi - I have a number of sites we have developed using classic ASP & MS SQL Server etc over the past years and it's time I learnt .Net using VB. Now I could go and buy a shed load of books and plough through them - but I learnt ASP by sitting down with a friend for a couple of days and working through some examples. I learn best this way.

We traditionally have used Dreamweaver on the Mac and done our SQL Server stuff via Parallels. I would like to continue using DW but am also well aware that I need to look into Visual Studio.

If there are any members who develop using .net and VB in the West Midlands / Warwickshire area in the UK who would be interested in earning some hard cash to sit down with me for a day or so - or even a weekend - let me know.. I can afford pay about £100 / day cash.

I can't help, but I can say:

If you are using the .NET 2.0 framework (with Visual Studio 2005), you have a choice of VB or C#. Of the two, I think C# is the nicer language.

Visual Studio 2008 is out now with the .NET 3.5 framework.

As a tip, there is a free product, called Visual Web Developer 2008, which may serve your needs really well without having to pay for Visual Studio.

I am tempted with C# but i have a 'solid' background of VBScript and thought the transition might be easier with VB. I am also looking to move to NZ soon and I know there is a huge demand for ASP.Net with VB at the moment.

What's the difference between visual studio and Visual Web Developer 2008? (I know I'm being lazy here - I should go and have a look for myself really!)

For web development, as far as I can tell there is practically none (I used the 2005 Visual Studio and 2005 Visual Web Developer). It's the same IDE. This may have changed with the 2008 revision though.

You can also get free tools for application development as well, which come in either VB, C++, C# varieties. The full Visual Studio product includes all tools for application and web development in all languages.

As is the case for many Microsoft products, it's a completely unstreamlined product line designed to baffle the consumer.
