I am thinking of purchasing vBulletin to use on a website I may be developing.

How do you guys like it?

How hard is to to use on the back end?

How hard is to to do the initial set up and then how much maintenance is involved after.

I have no prior experience.

alternatives are OK as well if you have any to suggest. They just must be easy to use.
 
As long as you have knowledge setting up the config.php file of any script you're good. Once its installed its extremely easy to use. If not it might be a little tricky filling in the right fields with the right information. I don't ever recall the auto installer doing everything for me.
 
I hate vBulletin, well it's admin interface anyway. It's the ugliest and most cumbersome thing. Same thing with its front end. Keep in mind I work in education and therefore I need something that's extremely user-friendly, which vBulletin just isn't sometimes.

But it has the best user management features that I know of, which is why I use it.
 
I happen to enjoy the front end. (Meaning the end that I get to use on Macrumors.

But, I too work in education and know how "non-friendly" technology can be to many of the older teachers.
 
vBulletin is extemely easy to set up and manage, and blows away the competition IMHO. Your users will find it clean and easy to use, and the customisation is endless. There are also endless plugins that have been developed, so you can make your vBulletin as unique or as generic as you like.

Older versions used to be a little more tricky. These days the Admin panel makes most things a breeze, and updates are a five minute job.

Used it for years, worth every penny.

That applies to vBulletin also to an extent - and PHP in general (it's not exactly known for being secure!)

You will, however, get a far more polished user experience from vBulletin. Personally I think the freebies are pretty poor, though not without their uses.
