Here is my first attempt at vectoring for a class. I had no experience and thought we would be taught a bit better, but I guess in college your expected to have the skill already.

Anyways, took me a few days, probably 4-5 hours/day. I dont know how to rate it as my first time, and I didn't know how to make smooth curves until the teacher showed me (and I prety much slapped my forehead) so I gave up on the text (I didn't want to just pick a random font). I need more learning.

Adobe Illustrator CS3

For a first time, it's really great. I've been using illustrator for 6 months in my course and I don't know if I could manage all this forms.

How were your performances at the times? Was Illustrator chocking itself on the vector?

It was extremely hard especially on my 13.3" MacBook. And often times it lagged and I got worried about it getting ready to crash. I had to zoom in, and still sit about 10cm's from the screen. But I did a little more than half on the schools Mac Pros.

Not bad for a first stab. It still needs work, however.

The toughest thing about working with Illustrator (or any rendering tool, for that matter) in these types of projects is accurately replicating what you see. Edges of most real-life objects aren't as precise and sharp as you've made them here. The top edge of the light blue shape just above the µ for instance, has a rounded highlight - in fact, there really isn't a precise, sharp corner anywhere in the original photo at all.

Looks like you played around with the mesh tool a bit (or perhaps blends?). Those tools require some very careful consideration to come off well.

lately, I've been doing some work using the mesh tool to create rounded edges and found it can do a very reasonable job, but it's a lot of work, and can get very confusing very fast.

Here is a sample of a Red Wasp I just did for a client. It took me about five hours.

If I were approached by a client to create the illustration in your assignment, I would probably charge them based on an estimated time of 5-7 hours. I might be able to do it faster, but that would give me a bit of a cushion.

Wow that really good for a first attempt. I've been using Illustrator for more than a year now and I still suck at it. I believe it realistic enough, depends what you're using it for. For example, there's no point replicating something exactly if you can use the original source, except if you wish to modify the colour to green, apply new texture, etc.

Nice work :)
