Velocity Solo X2 cables for 2on drive on Mac pro 2009 4,1

Hi,

I am quite a newbie in this so any help will be highly appreciated.

Got a Mac pro 8 core 2,26 4,1 which I am upgrading the firmware to 5,1. I have bought the Velocity Solo X2 Pcie card but don't know which cables should I buy to connect the second SSD drive (Crucial).

Can you please point me to the exact cables and length I should buy for the power supply and data?

Thanks!. But this thread is discussing the card on a 5,1 Mac pro. Mine is a 4,1. Don't know if the hardware is different...

Also this thread suggests the power cable to be an old 4 pin molex power connectors, but the link they shared says "15 Pin SATA Power Extension Cable"

Regarding this issue, 4,1 and 5,1 are the same.

There's no 4pin molex I know of in the MacPro4,1 (or 5.1). In the earlier models the optical drive used PATA and used them, but our models are all sata. You need the SATA power (15pin) assuming you're going to steal off the optical bay or one of the drive bays.

You might want to consider a 15 pin splitter instead of just a straight extender - allows you to use all the existing SATA2 ports if you ever want to fully populate the machine with drives - I bought that cable for mine, though haven't decided out where to physically mount the extra drive yet.

Just so that you are aware of this. Instead of cables, you do have the option of buying a Velocity Duo X2 which holds 2 SSDs that can be Raided or used separately. Amazon sells the for $149 as does the Apricorn store.

I like the out-of-the-box dual boot (2 single SSD's) with the DUO X2, although it might not be the fastest solution. A stable workable setup, that will run your single SSD's at it's max is also worth something.

I fount it interesting that on the downloaded spec sheet it says the following under "Specifications":

Disk Array Options -- JBOD, Spanning and Hardware RAID 0 & 1


I did not expect hardware RAID here. So you can run either software or hardware RAID apparently, along with separate disk access.

I couldn't determine from the spec sheet if the RAID-0 hardware could be used with Windows on a Mac?

There's a few ODD power extension topics in this forum. In the 4,1 it's a 60 cm SATA power extension cable but the ends have to be slim enough to get fed round the back of the bay into the drive sled area. Some use adapters to molex from the ODD as the molex ends are quite easy to remove, feed through the gap and reattach with sata converters at the other end.

If you want external power for any other devices in your PCIe slots run the extension else go for the X2 duo. My ODD lead powers a SSD stuck on top of the original SSD and goes in sata port 2 of the original X2.
