Even though I've used iphones since iphone 1, I'm far from as competent as I am with macs when it comes to using all the features and customizing my iphone. I only use it for very basic things like calls, messages, pay, bus tickets, map, basic info, and sync to my mac. Very little photography as I have a camera for that.

I recently found a nice deal on a iphone 12 mini, like new, and with a new battery, and I've retired my old original SE, which I would have kept because it was so perfect, sat so well in my hand, but the 12 was so tempting, and I now have FaceID instead of TouchID, a fresh battery, and compatibility with current iOS. The SE stopped at v15.

First time I connected it to the mac, I got the "An update to macOS is required to use this iphone...". I'm on Ventura, and I plan on staying there at least until there's a reasonably mature Sequoia out. I clicked "Not now" and there was no problem restoring from my SE backup.

Everything seems fine, I'm just wondering, it now has iOS v 17.7. The notifications every time I connect it to the mac says "required"; IS it really required? And what if I go to iOS18.01; will it be a problem with Ventura on the mac. I guess I don't really need 18, am I missing out on anything?

I'll take any input you might have on these things.
Anything specific to the 12 mini that I should be aware of?

Thank you in advance.

The lenses on the iphone 12 seems to be very exposed. I really like to not use a case, and when I put my iphone on the table, it's obvious that the lenses are taking a part of the contact stress. As a photographer, I'm not comfortable with this. I guess the solution is a case of some sort.
