..I read this more as a 'dear diary' that the reviewer doesn't know whether 15 inch M2 Air or 14 inch MBP M3 is for him than a review of the new product itself.

Actually, it's the whole point.
The 2 products overlap massively.
They didn't give M3 to the Air only because it has been around too little for an upgrade, or because it would have ran too hot without a fan.

I do wonder why they didn't just put the M3 in the M2 Air as well.

Conspiracy theory #642323 - DOES THE M3 RUN TOO HOT TO PUT INTO A FANLESS CHASSIS? IS IT TOO HOT FOR THE AIR AND THE IPAD??

;)

At this point, if you're OK with 8GB RAM, you might as well get an M1 Air.
You'll be obsoleted by the RAM bottleneck way before the SoC exhausts its potential.

Lol, yes, many YouTube videos like this will pop up. MaxTech anyone?

I am sure the Air will get the M3, but didn't yet since the M2 Air is relatively new. They probably want to keep the Pro/Air model lines more differentiated for the launch sales boom.

I assume that the more efficient M3 (non-Pro/Max) chip would run cooler in the next MacBook Air update since they can get the same performance of the M2, but with reduced heat and power needed due to the 3nm process, even if it's bumped up a bit to show a performance improvement. The highlight and selling point would probably be insane battery life.

I don't think the Verge review cited thermals versus the M2 (even against the Air), which is odd considering that this generation of Apple Silicon is using 3nm.

I think current TMSC n3b is not capable to produce a m3 for fanless devices.

iPad Pro and air are waiting for next year n3e.
