Verification of upgradability of current desktop's RAM

I'm about to pull the plug on a new desktop but plan on ordering with minimal RAM as I believe I can upgrade the RAM myself via a cheaper source. Please confirm this is possible, and are there any drawbacks to this approach? TIA,
