verify disk permission?

I was told to use verify disk permission often but what does it actually do?

the one you actually want to use is repair disk permissions. i think repearing file permissions sets the permissions on access to the file to how they should be as they can get messed up. if they are correct it makes your computer work better. well that is how i see it anyway. (im now waiting for somebody who actually knows what they are talking about to correct me! )
