So my service contract with Verizon ends in September, I get a call from them yesterday saying they were pleased to offer me a new Samsung something or other phone and more minutes for no $$ I would have to sign a new 2 year contract though. So me thinks they are getting all those who have contracts ending soon to renew to prevent them from buying iphones.

Well the good thing for those who stay with Verizon, Sprint, T-mobile, and Alltel is that they will probably begin to offer some awesome plans and phone deals to compete. Even people like myself who cannot get an at&t contract (because they don't serve my state) might benefit with much better deals from other carriers.

There's no AT and T in SD? That's odd. I thought that AT and T was everywhere?

that's actually a good thing if you dont' want an iphone. ATT/cingular is so behind technology wise (for internet/reception). They have probably the 2nd worst reception (tmobile is #1!!!) out there.

Interesting they're doing it spontaneously. But it makes sense, since they're probably more likely to keep you than when they respond to your call to cancel service. Is the Samsung they offered actually a quality product, or is it junk?

I'm so calling Nextel today.

My contract ended in February of this year and I'm definitely considering pulling something like the following:

Me: Yeah, Nextel? Um, I'm thinking I might cancel my subcription to your services, seeing as how there will be no penalty at this point and that new iPhone looks really cool!

Nextel: I'm sorry to hear that.

Me: Yeah, so, like. Maybe I'll reconsider if you were to, say, sweeten the deal a little for me...

Nextel: No.

Me: What the f... Please?

Nextel: Nope. So would you like me to go ahead and cancel your service now?

Me: *long sigh* Noooooo... I can't afford an iPhone anyways. I was just trying to use the iPhone hype as leverage for my own personal gain. I'm sorry.

Nextel: You should be ashamed of yourself.

Me: I don't know what I was thinking.

*hangs up in embarrassment*

That's probably how it will go, too. :(

I had a similar conversation with Sprint a few years ago when number portability first went into effect.

Me: I've been a customer for a few years now, and I want to get a new phone. Are there any special deals that you can offer me?

Sprint: No....

Me: So you're saying that I'd be better off switching to another carrier, especially now that I can keep my number?

Sprint: Um.... we don't want to lose you as a customer....

Me: If that was true, you'd probably offer some sort of incentive for me to stay with Sprint, wouldn't you?

-----
Then I switched to Verizon, got a better plan, better phone, and kept my number. I was hoping they'd have something to offer me, but they didn't. Now I'm hoping that in a year when my Verizon contract ends, some carrier will want a new customer, but I'm kinda doubtful. I'm also hoping that at&t will have improved its network, and the the iPhone might have a new improved version.

It doesn't hurt to try. If it fails with Nextel, go to Verizon or another carrier. They will all be desperate for sales today. After all, they will be losing a large number of customers today.

I travel through 8 southern states for my job. In march of this year my company moved us off Verizon, and onto Cingular. I was not happy. Verizon had the best coverage, everyone said so.

But after these several months, I have to say, I see no appreciable difference between Cingular/ AT&T's service and Verizons. There are a few spots where Verizon was stronger, but there are also spots where AT&T is stronger.

Other than concerns about EDGE, I really don't see what everyones problem is with AT&T.

It all depends on where you live or travel... When I moved from Michigan to West Kentucky, we brought some Verizon phones with us... Had great service up there in Detroit area (and Nextel worked well there, too)... But down here in this neck of the woods, the Verizon signal was very flaky... Could stand in one spot and watch signal go from zero to full and back to zero in one second... This was all the time...

Talking to some people around here led us to find out that the only phones that would work consistently were Cingulars... So here we are...

Granted, the other systems may work better around here now... That was almost 4 years ago. But there's few dead zones around here with AT&T so it's been OK for us. And now that I'll be getting an iPhone someday, I don't have to mess with changing carriers.
