I've noticed since 1/1/18 that the verizon logo on top left changes randomly. I never seen "VzW" before but now I see it frequently. It was always either "Verizon" or "VZW WI-FI" if I'm connected to wifi but never "VzW".
But the thing I can't figure out is why is it changing between VzW and Verizon.
Has anyone noticed this?

Google this. It also happens on Android phones.

Short answer: it's carrier settings and depends on the tower your phone is currently pinging. Bottom line, the phone is connecting to Verizon.

The carrier branding on iPhones in the top of the screen is ugly. Apple should get rid of it.
As I recall that was part of the tradeoff for not having carrier branding on the phone itself. Would that kind of branding be a better option?

They might be pushing a new carrier name and not all the towers are being updated at once.

VzW makes sense because it takes up less room and thus will fit more easily on the iPhone X.

I don't like corporate logos either; and use a case that covers the apple logo (if i am going to be a billboard I expect to get paid).
The carrier logo on the screen is actually a useful bit of information if a user roams into an area that their primary carrier does not service. Some customers are not paying for roaming so that logo change lets them know that they are not getting service. It also tells them if their service all of a sudden degrades then its likely a change in carrier that is responsible since they are now in a new cell tower area.

That excuse doesn't make sense when the iPhone is carrier unlocked and paid for in full from an Apple store.

No excuse was given, so no clue what you are referencing to. As for making sense or not, that's what the story has been behind it and how things work (or at least have worked) with carriers, at least in the US.
