Verizon MiFi + iPhone / iPod Touch = Perfect Device

Hello,

As some of you probably already know from a past post, I basically made the move to go to verizon due to I could no longer handle the drop calls, missed calls, poor reception, and the "deal with it" attitude of AT&T. But I love my iphone and wanted to keep it, even if only as a mobile wifi device.

Enters the Verizon MiFi. This thing is amazing. I heard about it, but since I was on AT&T I didn't pay it any attention. So im in the verizon store signing up for the Samsung Omnia and telling the rep the issues (he was floored when he saw I had the iphone and wanted to know why I was leaving) So after we finish he tells me about the mifi device and pulls it out of the box. This thing is TINY its about the size of a playing card, and about as think as a couple cards (like 5 or so) This thing can easily fit into a pocket without notice and the best thing is that it produces a wifi hotspot that moves with you and uses the verizon 3G network.

So I pick it up, go home, set it up, and tie it to my now deactivated iphone via wifi, it picks it up with no problem and now I can still use all the functions of my iphone (except of course for the phone part). Plus I can sling without jailbreaking. I am officially happy again. I have the Omnia for my phone and the iphone for my mobile computer on the go. plus now as I travel, no more paying extra hotel fees for internet, this device can connect up to 5 devices. I had my mac, iphone, and Omnia all connected at once, and was slinging on the iphone, surfing on the net with my mac book and also on Omnia and no slow downs.

The data package are the same as all the data plans that deals with internet cards.

for the (Unlimited **5 Gig Cap**) it is $59.99.

But the best part of this is that MULTIPLE devices can hook onto this device instead of one device using those usb cards.

visible light frequency is about 10^16 whereas radio is <10^10. So better hide the testicles from the light
 
Have you tried any of the VOIP apps with this combo?

If that works, it means you now have a way to make phone calls that works with either AT&T or Verizon coverage, whichever is better, or especially if only one is available (when traveling with a single cell phone, it always seems to be the other one).
 
Have you tried Skype with this? How much data would it use? I'm honestly considering dropping my cell service all together, getting an ipod touch, mifi, and skype.

I mean, why not really? I rarely talk on the phone, I usually just use AOL, or email to communicate.

Think about it. Mifi for 60.00/month+Skype out for $2.95/month=$62.95/month voice and data.

In addition you would have Verizon's 3G coverage that blows away AT&T's coverage.

AND Skype is supposedly adding SMS to their iPhone App in the future.... I mean really. This could blow away my cellphone.
 
Or... get a Pre on Sprint. 450 mins with unlimited text, data, navigation, TV... for $70... and you get to roam on Verizon's network. Best of all worlds, as long as your home is near a native (non-roaming) Sprint tower.

Oh, and get the Touch anyway, just to use around the house on WiFi :)
 
I just got the mifi. Carrying it in your pocket is no more dangerous than carrying your phone in your pocket- so if you are worried about cancer, be careful where you place either device.

As far as using the other device recommended in order to turn your phone into a wifi hotspot, I'm not sure how that offers a different service from the mifi- is it basically the same? I don't have a smartphone (just LG's Voyager) but I have an iPod Touch and got it mainly for that. Works great so far (after going through three different techs until I found someone who knows both the Mac and the mifi). I don't get good EV service in my neck of the woods, though, so both the phone service the mifi would benefit from being located in an area with better reception.
 
I just got an Itouch and would like very much to get the Mifi so that I can do wireless at work, etc. I have the Sprint family plan now and an Samsung Rant. I pay $140 total (a second phone only has data plan). Any ideas on how I can manage the Mifi and be able to pay less than $200 a month? Is the Mifi 2352 available here in the states?

I have a work provided MiFi. It really is a great device. (I also use it personally to Sling without jailbreaking, haha) One bummer though, the battery life is only good for a few hours and you need to have it on in order to receive calls. If your usage pattern can accept that restriction, then great. I will also say that it gets a bit warm for regular pocket carrying.

Wouldn't work for my usage pattern but believe me, it's one of the first things I thought when I got the thing from work. I can say it's nice on trips where the kids are in the back seat with their Touches and laptops, all connected via the MiFi. Awesome device!
