Hey Guys,

I switched last year to Verizon and got an iPhone 7 Plus at launch.
I would like to pay off the remaining balance of the phone (I have around 56% left) and upgrade to iPhone 8 (monthly payments).

How can I prepare for the Pre-order?
Should I pay off the phone before the pre-order date or should I do that when I preorder?
Am I better off pre-ordering from Apple or Verizon's website?

It's my first time upgrading through Verizon so that's why I ask :)

Thank you!

Verizon lets you upgrade once you've paid off 50% of the device, so you can basically upgrade every year. You don't need to pay the whole phone off. This is assuming you're willing to turn the phone back in to them.

If you got your iPhone 7 with one of those special deals they did when the 7 launched, you got monthly credits to offset the price you paid. If you trade in now you lose whatever remaining credits are still out there.

I did that and just checked my account. I have 13 payments with 13 credits still outstanding on the iPhone 7 plus. I've decided that the iPhone 8 just doesn't offer enough to take that hit.

I don't know if it's been confirmed yet whether those credits are tied to the device or to the overall account. One of my lines has that promo from last year. I wouldn't trust what a call center says on this subject until something solid comes out.

Trading in is definitely the easiest option, however, you can sell it for a much higher value if you pay it off and resell on craigslist. I do that every single year and sell the phones for 700/800usd rather than the 450they value while trading in :)

Where do I see that promo? I pre-ordered it and do not recall getting any special deals on it, but I might be wrong :)

I believe they are tied to the device with a specific phone number. I suspect, we cannot upgrade our phones unless we pay the balance. Not sure how it works with transfer upgrade option.

Hey guys need your opionion.I usually pre order through Verizon.com but this year my friend actually works at a corporate Verizon store and says that he can order it for me and my chances on getting it on release day will be better.Any suggestions on which way I should go.

Is that plan dependent ? Our son's phone is due for pay-off in November and the only upgrade option for his line currently is to pay off the remaining balance.

That's how it is on our account. I am eligible for an upgrade now and actually spoke to a VZW rep a few days ago. She strongly encouraged me to hang on to my 6+ until the "8" comes out (she knew nothing about 7s/7s+ models - said "well, you know more about these than I do") and if like last year, VZW may offer a 100% monthly credit for a "new" iPhone if I trade mine in.

So do any of you think the sim free version will be available for preorder?

Anyone with Verizon that upgrades every year can let me know the best way to prepare for the preorder? :)

If I were you, I would pay off my balance now. Paying off the phone during preorder can get messy and delay your shipment time due to a lot of things need to be taken care off before preordering and then by the time preordering starts, the shipping time slips due to the stocks for original shipping time are gone.
I would order through Apple. Apple preordering is usually smoother than carrier preordering. Good luck!!

Good advice here. I plan on clearing any ordering details/questions with my carrier today.

No need to prepare for anything. When you login to your Verizon accnt page, click on the device you'll be upgrading and click on turn in and upgrade. If there's a balance remaining to get you to the 50% point, you'll be asked to pay that at checkout. Simple. At that point you go into the new contract on the new phone whatever those terms are. They mail out a box to return your current phone.

Not sure. From what I remember (which may be wrong) they started this at the same time Apple rolled out its own upgrade program/payment plan. You may need one of the newer Verizon Plans that started around that time.

So I have a question. The past 2 years I have preordered the new iPhone through VZW.com and used the verizon payment plan. I have been playing on apple.com and it seems as if you can actually go right through apple and select the option to use verizon’s Payment plan. Anyone have experience doing this? Verizon’z website last year glitched and caused quite a delay in shipping.

There Seems to be a lot stipulations though. If you opt to pay off to upgrade your device, you have to be at 50%, which I don't know how you would be able to do that if you have to make the payments and then pre-order. Unless you own your iPhone out right, then you could use Apple's website through Verizon to continue. I plan on upgrading to Verizon this year personally.
