My 1st generation iPhone died yesterday, and I was given another 1st generation iPhone from the Apple store today. When I synced it for the first time, iTunes asked if I wanted to "restore the iPhone or was it a new iPhone?" I selected restore but I was told my iPhone’s version was too old and that I need to select new phone, update, and then restore. If I do select update, iTunes wants to backup the iPhone first like always. My question is when I update to 2.0 and then iTunes restores my backup will it restore my old backup from my first iPhone, or will it restore it from the backup from this new phone?

If iTunes is going to restore the backup from the new phone, how do I get my old iPhone's backup?

Thanks,

MIKE

When you do a restore the second time, you'll be able to choose the backup from a drop down list. Just make sure you don't name the just-updated iPhone the same as your old one, or you'll overwrite your old backup.

Once you've selected your old backup and restored from it, your iPhone can be named anything you want it to be named.

scaredpoet- well....I did rename the new iPhone that same as the old one. Is there a way to rename my new iPhone before I update it?

I figured out the name change, and it worked like you said. Thanks for your help!
