I had this error today while surfing Safari. I had the phone upright and typing as normal and the keys and letters were showing up side-ways! A few hours later I had 3 or 4 dropped calls in a row. Any ideas? It is a new (few weeks old) 16gb 3g iPhone with 2.2 firmware.

Just a bug most likely. If it were a problem with the accelerometer, the whole display would be either in landscape or portrait; not the case with you. Try a restore.

The protocol that deals with the auto-correct and characters popping up is probably messed up through software and is reading the accelerometer data wrong. A restore should fix it. I don't see how the dropping calls and this problem could be related though. Two different protocols in the firmware.
