Hi,

I just purchased a new 19" widescreen LG monitor about 10 days ago. I am now seeing a vertical line in the monitor which measures about 1 pixel in width and, except for a few interruptions, runs the entire height of the monitor. I've got it connected to a 12" 1.2GHz iBook. The line is red and blue and it appears to be permanent (i.e., it doesn't move when I shift windows around). The line is also there when I hook it up to a Dell laptop. Does anyone have any ideas?

Also, when the monitor is on but not connected to a computer, the line is not visible.

Seeing as how the line is visible on two separate computers, I'd have to say it's a dud. Of course, you could try to plug it in to a third computer if you're still not convinced. :p

It's broken, toss it back.

Modern monitors typically put the display to sleep when there's no signal. Can you get to the setup menu when it's not connected to a computer? Do the lines show up then?

When I unplug the monitor (while it is ON) from the computer, the screen remains lit, but it's black. Also, when I first turn the monitor on, it is lit for a few seconds. The line is not visible in either of these cases. It appears that the line is only visible when it is receiving a signal.

Some additional observations

1) The line doesn't appear on the iBook - only the external monitor.
2) When I boot up my computer, the line is NOT visible on the light grey screen with the apple in middle. Also, the blue screen which has the dialog box and the startup information (i.e., Loading applications, etc.) does not cause the line to appear. The line is visible when the desktop is loaded even with the same blue color as the previous screen.

Any other thoughts? Thanks everyone.

That tells us that the backlight works, but we knew that.

Is this a dual interface monitor? If you are using DVI, can you try it with analog to see if the problem follows along?

With two computers showing the same problem i think it's a pretty safe bet that the monitor is faulty, but this might be nice to know so you can more easily get an exchange or warranty repair.

Okay, so there could be one pixel that needs to be lit up enough to trigger the leakage. But really, if you're seeing the exact same thing on two completely different computers, that leaves the monitor (very likely) or the cable (wicked unlikely for a single consistent stripe) as the problem.

Was this some kind of all-sales-final deal where you can't return the screen or something?

Return the monitor for a new one, its obviously is defective. Their is no reason for you to stress yourself out and waste time by trouble shooting something that is supposed to work out of box, just get a replacement.
