I finally bought a 20 inch iMac after a full year of planning on switching to it a couple of weeks ago. I thought that it was the perfect time to get one, i had heard of no rumors about new revised iMacs on the horizon at all. so the last couple of weeks were great, got boot camp installed wiv no faults, im usin mac os x about 95% of the time still, because its such a great OS.
But now, i come back on a saturday to read that new iMacs are on the horizon, and will probably be showcased on the 12th, which is a week from now. to say im annoyed is an understatement really, ive paid 1200 of my own saved up money for a year, to only find out now that its goin to be obsolete in a week. so now im not sure wot to do. So any help would be appreciated.

There will always be something new on the horizon. Your computer will still be lightening fast for years to come so I say just enjoy it. You won't be missing out. It's not like the iMac you bought is old, plus iMac's retain their value for years.

my suggestion would be to enjoy your new machine. Waiting will just lead to more waiting..... technology is always getting better. I have, and LOVE, a g4 ibook. I could be upset that as of now the same price could get me one heck of a machine with a lot more features, but i just enjoy the fact that i have a better machine that most all my PC using friends. woot!

Why? be happy with what you have, i have a MBP and they are rumored to be updated soon as well. i could see if you bought it, and the next day they came out with something new, you'd be annoyed. I'm not sure what the policy is on trading somethihng in, and paying the difference, but i think it's a slim chance if you've had it for several weeks. Bottom line, be happy with what you have, I am. :) (I too payed for mine with my own money)

Deep breaths, and relax :)

I'm afraid this is just how things are. Remember that the machine you've got is still the machine you bought. You've not really lost anything. If you're a recent switcher, you might be suffering from the 'must-upgrade!' psychosis. This will pass in time :) Your Mac will serve you as well as the day you bought it for years to come. It will run OS X 10.5, 10.6, and almost certainly 10.7. Macs have a nasty habit of staying around, and OS X has a nasty habit of running damn well on years-old hardware.

It will still do everything you want (or bought it for). Technology moves on.
I bought a G4 PowerBook with Panther a couple of weeks before Tiger and shortly before the Intel announcement.

Just enjoy your spanking new machine.

was your imac a cool computer when you bought it?

will it explode on 12th when new ones come out?
no, didnt think so....so it will still be a cool computer...

theres always the next best thing coming up....it can be frustrating at times, but when you purchase a new mac, you purchased it coz it WAS the mac u wanted....its a great computer, love it and adore it....

picture this :
just think how mad you would be if you took it back, and got the latest and greatest only to be hit with a recall coz of faulty motherboards or powersupplies and be left with no computer for months...

At the risk of sounding like an ass (a risk I am quite willing to take), what did you expect? Even if you haven't been researching your purchase (like the $1200 price warrants), did you seriously expect your machine to remain top of the line for its entire lifespan?

And, if you did do your research, you'd know that an iMac revision was possibly just around the corner.

Solution: use your machine. Is it any slower today than yesterday?

I understand, especially when you save money so hard to get one, you sure want it to be at the front line, but trust me, in computer world, there isn't such a thing called "front line".
They always have new stuff out to make you feel yours is "previous generation". and the truth is, normally, the new stuff is always "CPU" which is indeed doesn't mean a thing. even if they have "Core8Duo" out in next 3 years, you computer won't be significant slow than that **** anyway. And all universe knows that the Bigger Ram make system runs better, not CPUs.

Seriously, if your machine is doing what you need it to, why sweat it? There will always be new machines and better specs. My Quad has been replaced - am I upset? Not one bit. Does exactly what I need it to do.

Enjoy your new machine. :)

so sell it now in case the 'rumours'..which is what they are....hold true. then get a new imac.

your current one is awesome. did you worry after you got it and realized how awesome it is? it does hurt realizing that new imacs might be around the corner, but my lord, if we all played the waiting game...we'd never get what we want...nor would we enjoy it.

enjoy!

i would only wait if something is RIGHT around the corner, as seems to be the case with merom. if there is nothing announced within a week from tuesday im pulling the trigger.

i suppose. my annoyance is just lettin me run away wiv itself, but before i had the imac, i had a computer that me anda friend had built, and a couple months later, AMD were on the show wiv thier first 64bit processor that beat mine out of the water, so i should be ok wiv this, but around the time i bought it, all the runors i had heard about the expo was about nano's and macbook pro's.
but yeah, everyone is rite, i should just accept it and enjoy it until it truly is obsolete in a few years.

WTF is "wiv?"

Bet it doesn't hurt half as much as those people who got new iMacs for Christmas last year since they were only updated in October or so... and then found they were now substantially slower in the first week in in Jan.

The iMacs hadn't been updated for sometime which can be found out very easily online... you didn't do enough research beforehand... tough cookies.

It still does everything that you expected it would do...

Perhaps his current iMac can't run spellchecking software.

In that case, replace it!

Obsolete

Oh my GOD! Sell it NOW! Quick! The new Apple iObsolete (TM) will kick in on the 12th and your new computer will stop working completely! You have 8 days to sell this or you're going to be sorry. I'll help you out and buy it from you for 100 bucks if you like, just as a favour of course, to help you out and all........:p

Hate to go against the flow here, but I doubt anything of the nature is going to be released. We all know how rumors have been working recently... think MacBook.

Not a big deal unless they put conroe in the iMac. Merom doesn't offer any significant improvement over Yonah.

Suck it up.

Look on the bright side, by buying late you got yourself a machine which has been sorted of the shouldn't-have-been-there-in-the-first-place bugs as far as it's within Apple's ability to do so. By buying one of the first of whatever's released, you run the risk of Apple's legendary quality control again.

yeah wtf is WIV, lol :)
you'll be just fine as pointed by the responses above.
i bought mine on the 22nd august and returned it on the 2nd sept. not because of this hype of c2d and speed bump etc... but i realize that my powerbook g4 12" (1.5ghz 1.25gig)does fine and meets my computing needs from top to bottom thus no need for imac. though i paid restocking fee. no biggie.

I agree I bought my MBP a couple of weeks ago with merom around the corner but who cares? The MBP in its current state is more than doing its job wonderfully for me. Is your Imac doing what you want it to do and what you bought it for. Yes? Then be happy with what you have and don't worry about the upgrades.
