Very basic contact sync help

Hey guys, i'm sure to most of you this is going to seem like a ridiculous question but I recently got a new laptop (finally switched over from PC to MAC and loving it!) and when I try and sync my iphone to the macbook, it basically just wipes all my contacts because it is syncing from the computer to the iphone and not from the iphone to computer. This happens for the calendar too.

Is there any way of getting all my calendar appointments and contacts from my phone onto my new macbook pro?

On iTines, go to iPhone>Info.

Look at the bottom of that screen and see if the settings say to replace the iPhone's contents with the computer's contents.
