Hi guys,

I am very confused about the Messages app.

I have an iPhone 6S and OS 9.2.1 and I have no third party apps installed and never have installed any.

Under settings > Messages "iMessage" is turned on and "Send as SMS" is turned off - I don't recall having ever changed this setting. I'm wondering if this means if the other person doesn't have an iPhone will they still get my message?

Any help is appreciated.

send as SMS is turned off by default. Just turn it on. Sometimes other iPhone users may not have a good data connection so the iPhone will send/receive an SMS instead until their connection is better.

There are times I'm messaging my sister and the chat bubble will go from green (sms) to blue (iMessage) within the same conversation. I can literally tell when she has better network coverage.

Say the other person doesnt have an iPhone? What happens then if send as SMS is turned off? Will they get my text?

Yes. Send as SMS is only related to iMessage in the sense if you send an iMessage and it doesn't go through for some reason then it will automatically be sent as SMS in that situation if that option is enabled.

Be careful if you don't have free international texting though and have friends in other countries. We specially turn off that setting as we have relatives in the USA and if an iMessage fails, we would then be charged for the SMS message.

to avoid that, send to their Apple ID instead of their phone number

I don't have their apple IDs. :) I am fine with the current setup since both end in same result which is not having an SMS message through after a failed iMessage. And keeping it off saves me from it happening accidentally and costing me money.
