Very Confused by All This Stuff - Help a specific case?

Hello, I do apologize for being 1 of 1,000 who have sought advice, but I have a slightly unique case...

I bought a used iPhone (EDGE, I believe. Has an aluminum back...) without a SIM card.

Firmware is 2.2 according to the 'About' menu.

Could someone tell me what I need to do to be able to use this phone without DATA? I don't care if the carrier is T-Mobile or AT&T. Just need to know what to do to use this beautiful device since, I'm sure, AT&T guys won't help be out here. If I need to provide any more info, I will. Any help is appreciated!

Go sign up for T-Mobile and tell them to block data to your SIM. You must actually tell them this.

T-Mobile will give you a SIM when you activate.
