I bought a Smart Case for the mini before Christmas, thinking that the price was acceptable if the quality was good. Initially I was mostly satisfied with it, did my normal mod with magnets to hold the cover on the back and a stylus holder. The hinge annoyed me a little, and the fact that the flap didn't sit flush on the back unless you held it there annoyed me a bit more, but generally I was satisfied. It felt great, looked great, allowed me to quickly take the iPad mini 2 out of it, etc.

Unfortunately, only a bit over a month in, the thing is practically unusable. The iPad comes out of the case by itself near the flap part, and it simply won't lock securely inside the case.

Honestly I'm having trouble seeing how this is not going to become a problem with all of these cases, unless maybe if you never ever remove the iPad mini once it's in there. Either way it's disappointing to see something like this from Apple, and I've gone back to a smart cover + back case combination.

I had two Smart Cases for my iPad Air and the instability of the trifold in stand and typing modes was enough to return them both. Ended up with Smart covers in a few colors, white carbon fiber type back skin and an additional white frost Poetic back snap in case if I feel the need for additional protection. Even though I have always been a case person, I'm finding that I like the iPad best with only the Smart Cover (due to its stand function) and the back skin. I have the back case but really never feel inclined to bulk up the Air. Loving going light.
