Hi, just got an AirPods Max. When I tested it for the first time, turning on and off noise cancellation worked fine. However, when I tried again, a very loud hissing sound was generated from the right side. It was so loud that it could damage my hearing. Tried that button a few more times and every time I pressed it, I got very loud hissing sound. What is wrong? Did I get a defective device? At this price range, this should not have happened.

It has nothing to do with price range !
Maybe from the hundreds of thousands of headphones sold you might have a faulty Max...it can happen.

Try a reset, and if that doesn't work contact Apple.
not too difficult.

Cover your left ear with your left hand, if you can still hear what I typed, on your right side ?
then you don't have hearing damage :)

I think there are two different kinds of hissing sound issues. The loud one I mentioned and the softer one when I changed the loudness under Windows 10.

Does the device store any information such as my Apple ID, computers/deviced it has connected to and the network? Asked Apple but the guy had no idea!

This issue happened only on the first day. Do other users have the same issue?

I bought a computer product few years ago. It had some issue on the first day of use. It disappeared so I did not bother to ask for an exchange. Then, once in awhile, the same issue reappeared. Should have replaced it.

I have had something similar happen maybe 3 or 4 times over my month of ownership. Throwing them in the case and taking them out fixes it. If that does not fix them, then that is not normal.

Why doing that fixed the problem. What is the cause?

It is basically turning them on and off. I assume it is just something goes wrong in the wake process, so putting them back to sleep and waking them up again redoes the process. The only way to put them to sleep is to put them in the case.
