Very n00bish question!

I just bought a mac yesterday and I am new to them. I will do some tutorials later on.

I downloaded mac:messenger for it because I thought that It would be the most compatible with mac.

The program works fine and I have the icon on my doc, but along with it, it also installed a little icon (not the messenger one) just below the mac HD icon. I opened it and it opened a little window saying something like 80MB remaining. Is this the shared folder for messenger?

I also initially wanted to get msn messenger 7.5 for my mac. If I were to donload it for mac would it be compatible?

How do I uninstall programs?

I dunno much about messenger, but that 2nd icon on your desktop sounds like a dmg file, which you should be able to delete.

To uninstall applications - merely just drag them into the trash.
Voila! You're done.

It sounds like you have downloaded a dmg file. This is a disk image. A disk image is a file that behaves like a removable drive. The icon below your Mac HD icon is the mounted disk image. You can unmount it by dragging it to the trash. You can then delete the disk image file.

You can uninstall applications by just dragging them to the trash.

I have no idea about MSN though, sorry...

I also got a note on messenger saying that it is always running (I don't want this to happen). The other thing that was installed (under mac HD) is supposed to be ejcted, not deleted as if it's some sorf of drive. I tried to eject it but the computer said that it was in use.

The icon that you downloaded is a disk image. When you double click it, it mounts a drive. Quite Messenger and then drag the Messenger icon from the mounted drive to your Applications folder. That will install the app for you. You can then eject the mounted driver and delete the disk image.

Strange thing that I noticed is that I just turned on my PC today and now the "drive" is gone! Is it gone forever or will it return?

EDIT: It has returned when I started messenger so I am doing as rdowns said

EDIT 2: I did as rdowns said, but when I moved the drive into the apps folder it just created a shortcut. Then I tried to eject it and it said that it was in use.

I think the reason tha I can eject it is that even though I have quitted messenger, it says that it is still in use when I close it.

You don't need to copy the drive into the applications folder, only the messenger application file inside the drive. Once that's done you can eject the drive and delete it.

I think you're using the app from the dock which is still a shortcut to the app in the dmg. I recommend you drag the app out of the dock and put it in again from your Applications folder. Then you can do what rdowns said.

Hang on a sec. You should be able to drag anything off of the dock and it will disappear in a little 'poof' of smoke. I'd suggest starting the whole process over to get it right from the start. Right-click (ctrl-click) on the icon and choose 'remove from dock' if possible.

QUIT the Messenger program first and then do as instructed. Since you're a newbie, you probably think that by clicking the red dot of its window quits the program, it does not. Right click or control click the icon in the dock and select quit. Then proceed.

To uninstall messenger, you do just as you said and drag the file to the trash. If you like you can also do a Spotlight search for messenger to find any associated preferences files that may be scattered about and erase those as well, but they're usually small and not necessary to be erased.

As for finding out whether you can get msn 7.5 for mac, why not just go to microsoft.com and have a look?

Although some did say it before, I'll do it again: right-click on the dock icon and select to quit the program. After that you can drag it out of the dock. Then open the mounted dmg (under your HD) and drag the app to the Applications folder. Afterwards, you can drag the app from the Applications folder to your dock and unmount the dmg.

yeah 5.1.1 is the latest but it is also completely pants so get yourself over to www.adiumx.com and get that its fully customisable and its really fun when you get into making your own sound sets you may find it rubbish at first but once you have some decent skins and such its much better!
