VERY Noticeable Lag

I have had my MBP for about two months now and it seems to be lagging a lot recently. I first noticed this when I would have a few applications open. The applications would freeze but eventually would return to normal. It seems like when the MBP gets hot (around 70 degrees Celsius) things start to freeze. My biggest concern is when I am typing something there is a definite noticeable lag. Since it is not happening all the time, (happens more when computer is hot but still happens when it is not) how will I show this to a mac genius? Is this a real problem that they will be able to fix???

Might be a certain program hogging your CPU or maybe you need to restart your MBP more often if you leave it running all the time (Especially putting it to sleep)

I don't see how this could be doing anything. Most people leave their computers on for most of the time. The only time it is typically restarted is after an update. What's more likely is a shortage of RAM. OP, the next time you notice a slowdown, open up Activity Moniter and see how much RAM is being used. If it's near the max, more RAM will probably give you a smoother ride.

This guy just dropped about 2 grand on a laptop and your telling him he needs more RAM just to make his computing experience free of lag?! I'm on a PowerBook with 512MB of RAM and I don't experience lag when typing.

but its occurring even when a lot of ram isn't being used... ex: when I am typing this message there is a considerable amount of lag from when i type to when it displays on the monitor... i do put my computer to sleep most of the time but i really couldn't see that as problem. man i miss my sony... but i just love the mac os
 
The behavior you are experiencing is definitely abnormal. I am running a C2D 2.33 GHz MacBook Pro with 2gb RAM and I experience no lag, even with my MBP running indefinitely.

First things first, I recommend that you make sure you don't have a horde of startup items (System Preferences -> Accounts -> Startup Items). Background applications can often cause system slowdown, and can be left as remnants of previous installations of other applications you thought you completely removed.

Secondly, I recommend running either 'top' from Terminal or using the Activity Monitor to view running applications, monitor RAM usage, etc. This will help you figure out if it is a process bogging down your computer or not.

If these steps do not help, then I'd either run a hardware test to see if you may have ended up with spoiled RAM, or take it in for a service at an Apple specialist.

There is no reason you should experience any slowdown from normal usage, especially from a professional laptop.
 
2 things run at system start up and i have been looking at the system monitor and theres nothin' fishy or anything :(

Whoops. Misread the post:eek: I thought the OP was noticing a lag when running applications only, I didn't read the part about typing. If it's Word combined with other mild RAM users, I can see this happening. Remember, you are on a Powerbook, which runs Office 04 natively. His new mbp needs Rosetta, which a RAM hog.

OP, what are you using to type when you notice the lag?

Now that is weird. Do you have Pages 06 or 08?

Do this the next time you notice a lag: open Activity Moniter and look at how much RAM is being used by each application. I still think this is a RAM issue. Did you put in any RAM of your own, or is it just the stock RAM that came with your computer?
