When I press the numlock button, a green light turns on under the keyboard. except, the light comes on directly between the F5 and numlock (F6) keys. should it not be right below the numlock key? it looks really weird.

I'd never noticed that before/ I guess it does look a little weird, but that's where it is so that's what it does - there's nothing 'wrong' with your MBP mine is the same.

M.

It's like that so it highlights the phrase "num lock", so it's not misplaced or anything.

Yes. OP, if you'll notice, "F6" is to the right while "num lock" is to the left. Hence the reason why the light is not centered.;)

Though on a side note, I have to question the usefullness of a num lock key on a notebook with no data pad...seems somewhat pointless (how many times are you going to need the number row disabled as opposed to enabled? The ratio is probably very heavily tilted towards needing it enabled).

Same thing on mine. On a slightly different note, what keys do you guys use for expose? F9 and F10 by default adjust keyboard brightness.

Fn+F9 and Fn+F10 will work:) However, I prefer using "corners" which basically allows you to put your cursor in any of the corners and activate certain preferences. To try it out, go to:

:apple:
System Preferences:
Dashboard & Exposé

You'll see the corners and what you can do with them. I find it to be a lot faster than the keys:)

Ya, I was wondering about that. Thanks for the information.

You guys are still wrong. The light is not even under the word "numlock" only about half the words have light under it. it is pretty much only between the 2 keys, and the "5" from F5. seems like it should be 2-3mm further to the right. all the light just shines out between the keys and farther back outside the keyboard towards the screen.

oh well. sending it back on monday because of yellowing so I could care less.

oh yeah, and while i'm here, i might as well ask another question. is there any way to navigate buttons in a dialog box (e.g. Continue, Cancel, Yes, No) using the keyboard arrow keys like in windows? or do i just have to get used to using the mouse?

The only problem is, I don't think they can position it anywhere else. Doesn't the key mount in the center, thus causing them to have to move the green light to where it is?

Oh, and CalBoy, the "num lock" turns off the letter function of the U,I,O,P,J,K,L,; etc. so you can use those keys as numbers. Some people prefer using the numbers on those keys as opposed to the numbers across the top.

As far as your other question, I remember reading a way to cycle through those buttons, but I forgot how and forgot where I read it at.

I think you're being a bit picky. In any case, the intent of the light is to illuminate num lock only, and that's what it does for the most part.

Oh...I learned to type using the number row at the top, so I never even bothered with that:eek: Thanks for pointing that out:eek:

Although, I can see the benefit of that, as it closely resembles a traditional data pad.

No problem. I actually never use it as the top row works just fine for me also. To be honest with ya, I just pulled my MBP out and hit the button and typed just to see what it did. I had a thought that it would turn the letters off, but wasn't sure. ;)

Hmmm...I wonder how many PC laptops do this. I should go check it out on my dad's HP:p

Edit: it seems that his has it too  :) Well, it is a good idea, I just wish I had known about it, because there are those few situations when I needed a data pad only.

Well if you ever remember, let me know. I really like using arrow keys.

You mean like the premium for a backlit keyboard on a mbp?;)

You mean the new ones without a data pad right? The BT ones? Hmm. That is weird.

No, the regular ones. Neither of the new ones or old ones, or the two before them had numlock keys. Maybe not even the one before that. I was pretty sure Apple had never implemented Num lock.

Oh that's right. That is one of the peculiarities of Apple I guess:eek:

IN System Preferences got to Keyboard / Mouse, and then jump to the Keyboard Shortcut tab (no idea why this is there, but it is) and then at the bottom of the window, there is a "Full Keyboard Access" thing, check the button instead of the one that is checked. Now you can use Tab to jump between things just like in Windows (seriously, until i found that and fn+delete, those were the only things I missed from Windows)
