VERY slow CPU

After doing some reading, I've found via my activity log that I've got something called "kav" running and soaking up all the usage on my MBP.

I've attached a screen shot but have no clue how to figure out what it is or how to stop it. I'm not sure if it's spyware/malware.

"KAV" = Kaspersky Anti-virus, it must be scanning your machine. Thats one reason I don't run anti-virus on my machines.

Yeah, it's taking up some space, but is 39 MB really something to be worried about? How much total memory do you have on your machine?

Just saying to consider that in comparison to Chrome, which, in this screenshot, is taking up a total 319.2 MB.. almost 8 times that..

It's the CPU use he's worried about.

Kaspersky

I've quit Kaspersky and "kav" doesn't show up in the activity monitor anymore. I've got 4GB of memory with the 2.53 GHz core 2 duo. I've still got just under 80GB free space on the hard drive as well so I don't think that could be an issue with it correct?

No. I was saying that if you've got 4GB of memory on your machine, you don't need to quit a 39MB program to conserve space. You need to find whichever program is actually slowing it down, and kill that. Background-running programs usually don't slow your comp down too much, or it would show up at the top of Activity Monitor's list. The exception would be .jar files and things of that sort.

I do not think you are understanding his post. His computer was slow because the KAV process was using up 185% of his CPU. It is a dual core machine meaning its using almost both of his CPUs to the max hence when he quit it his performance went back to normal.

When virus scanners run a deep file scan it can be processor intensive. Kaspersky was probably running a system scan in the background hence the high CPU usage. If you are concerned with it's usage of the CPU, either turn of any background scanning in KAV preferences, or remove the program.
